Oh OK... lol wonder which one I have then... Cali sucks for all it's smog regulations it has... talked to the smog shop I go to and found out once I switch the engine over with the tbi I have to let a referee inspect it before I can smog it... yeah sounds like fun... lol

Not a big deal really. The ref just looks it over, and does the test. Its the same cost of a regular smog. There is very little smog equipment on a TBI engine....even in Ca.
There are 3 reasons we have strict regs.
1) Highest population of the 3 main coastal states.
2) The smog program is a revenue generator...even at $8 for a certificate. Then count all the politicians who get kickbacks from the sierra club, and new car manufacturers....this is the ******** reason.
3) Because of our location, we often get stuck with the pollution that is created, because of the winds blowing **** back at us from the pacific....not too many offshore breezes. Even then our regulations dont need to be as strict as they are. If we could ever find a way to get rid of reason #2, things could possibly improve for the hobbiest.
I like some pollution controls personally....I was stuck behind a 70 c10 last week for 15 miles, and I dont think I had a nose hair left, and a pretty good headache brewing.

Oh I don't mind the pollution control so much... your right some people just run whatever and it can be bad... but the cost to the consumer trying to do the right thing is rediculous... the politics are the only ones reaping any rewards... I can't wait to start this build though... I think I'm gonna learn a lot and have some good family time with my brother...lol I already got the number to the local referee... thinking of calling to get a list of everything that I have to make sure is there

I got you bro!
Dont use aftermarket stuff as far as the hardware, keep it all GM.
Walker Cal Cat part# 80107
Evap (charcoal) cannister from a TBI truck, available as replacement at rock auto.
you can get away without a pump by using emissions diagram DHD...I have a copy of that. Spoke to the ref supervisor in Sacramento last week, he said no need for the air pump with an auto trans.
You will beed a stock TBI air cleaner, can be found on EBay, or a wrecker.
smog legal headers or OEM Manifolds, with heater stove for air cleaner.
Or just transplant everything from your burb.....LOL

OK so I'm looking at the wiring going to tbi that goes to the main fuse block on the driver's side under the hood... do I need to cut those wires loose to pull the loom with the motor???

yeah, there are a few wires that run from over there that have nothing to do with TBI. You are going to want to strip the whole harness down anyways, you can get rid of the stuff you dont need.

Ok... I'll wait before pulling it completely off the engine till I pull the engine... I think that would be easier... I'm trying to find out what gears are in the 84 to see if I wanna swap the axles too... the PO said he had the front hubs rebuilt right before the engine let go...

Also, Put that air pump and other air injection stuff in a box until you get it certified at a ref station...you never know around here.

Here in Oregon in the the lower Willamette Valley I don't have to run the pump or other emission stuff, but up in Portland you gotta have all that stuff because they test up there. When I rebuilt mine I left everything under the hood stock. On the exhaust I ran 2 1/2 inch pipe off the manifolds and did true dual exhaust without the cat to Magniflow mufflers, and then over the rear axle with turnouts behind the rear tires on both sides. It doesn't sound bad but I like the sound of Flowmasters better. For performance I probably would've been better going with the single exhausted magniflow system with a new cat. But hey I grew up with cars and trucks with dual exhaust.

Dual exhaust is fine if you dont get carried away with the pipe size. Everyone has opinions, but from my experience, especially with trucks, I personally would go no larger than 2 1/4...Maybe even dual 2", which is wonderful with straight through mufflers, really good torque off the line, and excellent cruising and passing power. I would keep the AIR pump too.
I would have the pump on mine, but I cant find a diverter valve.
