Thanks for the encouragement and replies, dual plane will be the way to go (edelbrock performer air gap looks good), i am used to using single plane intakes on the strokers i have done in the past. I agree the drum brakes will stop it fine i just hate hate replacing brake shoes lol.

Honestly, after dealing with stuck calipers and crusty rotors, I'd welcome changing shoes on drum brakes. Beautiful truck, and welcome.

Nice purchase. I did the same thing for my son a few years ago. 1973 Chevy Cheyenne Super with original 454 and TH400. I added a mild hyd roller cam, upgraded to AFR heads, and 770 Holley with dual plane Weiand intake. Lots of time and $$ but it's been fun. Let me know if you have questions.

The journey began yesterday as I rigged a horn to pass inspection as it appears there is no power getting to the horn relay, so another thing to look at. But after seeing the rats nest behind the dash I may just do a full or partial rewire to at least get rid of the bad wires and glass fuse panel. The engine may get pulled this weekend depending on the weather, but i may start a build threat as well :)

Gorgeous truck, welcome to the forum from the other end of 1-45 in Houston.
I grew up wrenching with my Dad on our square body trucks and Burbs. I think all women need to know how vehicles work and how all the parts fit together and do their jobs. He certainly thought so, which is why we had several projects together.
And square body trucks are great to learn on!

Very nice truck. I think if you give the interior and engine bay a good cleaning you won't believe how much nicer it will look. Just a few touch up's and that will take care of a lot of it. Yeah, just a mild performance upgrade will be all you'll need for that engine. They had so much power to begin with it won't take much over stock to burn the rubber off the tires anyway. And yes, as been stated do the A/C. And do go with Vintage Air.
Good luck and have fun with it. And get that girl out there and have her help with the rebuild. She will attract boys who know how to work, and not some boy who sits in front of a game all day. Those car boys aren't all that bad, at least they like being outside the house. I taught my daaughter as much as she was interested in. Now I can talk to her about car stuff and she knows what I'm talking about. It's a great bonding between father and daughter.

Good to hear! I'm a firm believer that girls can and should be able to play with cars and trucks! This includes knowing how they go together how and why everything works. If you know what's going on with your vehicle, some unscrupulous people can't tell you they're going to fix it and just create more problems and take your $$$.

K, so I am new to this site but have this bad boy that belonged to my dad before he passed. It had sat for about 10 plus years before I got it. I've done much if not all of the work on it myself despite being a disabled veteran. But we have replaced the wiring harness, we need to work on the fuel lines and relocate them to the outside of the chassi with new steel lines in order to get them away from the headers. The intake is an Ebay Air Gap and Rochester but will be getting a 90-degree heater hose fitting to go to the right side of the intake to compensate for the lack of being able to get the parts down at the local Napa and their inability to find the correct Bypass hose and fitting. More progress and up0dates yet to go. I also have installed an American shifter but had to build the shifter part of it by using a Jack Handle and a steel rod to make it more old school.
