Those 305 heads were likely chosen to get the compression up a bit.

Yessir electrician by trade so I collect the old stuff. The rest is just metal detecting finds and bottles from digs.

Don't go too big on the cam. 283s like less cam. Being 60 over is probably why it runs hot when hitting higher rpms.

Crusty Biscuit, my 65 c20 ran hot when going down the highway, and it had a 3 row, shroud, and good fan. Plenty of air flow, just ran hot down the road.

My old 65 c20 Mean Green never went above 1/4 from "C" on the gauge, but it had a 4 row.

Yes we used to bore them .125 over in the early 80s and called them 301s not realizing that made a 4 inch bore and basically a 302 like the early Z28s

I've heard of 283s being punched out that much, but I think it also came with overheating problems.

It all depends on the block. There were certain 283s that could go an 1/8.........but NOT many that would last. I do think I have one that is an original ChevyII block , with the screw on oil filter. Those were supposed to work? Easier way was use a small journal 327 block with a 283 crank.

Bored waiting on parts. Painted some brackets, and the intake. The truck hasn’t even left the driveway and it’s still been getting mad compliments from people in the hood. Decided I’m going back with the 3 speed manual for now just to keep the truck down intervals low. Today I ordered the cam kit, and about $300 worth of stuff from rock auto to go with it. Gaskets and bolts and blah blah blah. Going to go to the hardware store soon and get all new shiny bolts for things like water pump and bracketry etc.

I’ve been watching videos on how to put a clutch system back together since I’ve never had to do it.

After the truck is running and driving again, and my pocketbook is better, I’ll start figuring out what Transmission I want to do, but it will probably end up being the 2004r or something like it. Like mentioned at the start of this thread.

Went ahead and bought a new speedometer housing with the bolt and holder piece so it won’t leak anymore with that gaping hole. I did not however, buy a speedometer gear like I need because I just don’t know which one yet. I need to count teeth on things and research more. I really don’t care about the speedometer working, it would be cool, but that’s for a later date I think.

These heavy duty aluminum polished valve covers from Summit have really good reviews so I’m excited to see them on the engine. They have textured areas between the ridges that I was thinking about masking off and painting orange. Gotta love that Chevrolet orange.

So yeah, just waiting on the cam kit, head bolts, gaskets, etc. I need to go buy another three jaw puller for the harmonic balancer. I can’t seem to find mine. I bought a gasket and seal set for the three speed so I could take the side cover off and inspect it just to see because I’m curious.

I must say, I'm very happy and impressed to see your very realistic goals and the desire to keep the truck on the road, compared to just a few days ago.
Did I mention I’m bipolar lol? No but once I make up my mind and things make sense then I just move forward. Above all I want the truck on the road.
