I want to replace the exhaust on my 78 K10 stepside and wanted to know what you guys run for mufflers and systems.

I am thinking of going with a Flowmaster super 44 but cant find a system for my truck. I want to run the exhaust out under the steps before the rear tires.

Most pre-fabbed kits exit at stock locations or at the rear bumper. A custom system will need to be fabbed by a shop or by your own 2 hands. Best you find a shop that doesn't deal in catalytic converters; otherwise, you'll be paying to have those installed, too.

You can buy universal converters on RockAuto for $35. And there is a guy on eBay in Florida selling knock off flowmasters that sound better for $35.

I'd go glass-packs, IMO. My purple hornies sound GREAT!

Thanks for the suggestions. I don't have to run cats due to my trucks age so that saves me some. I'm going to school for welding and can get access to a tig welder to build my own. I also found a lightly used set of flowmasters on craiglist. If I do build my own Ill make a build thread.

I always run an H-pipe and always build my exhaust - but buy a pre-made H-pipe from Summit. If you'd like a nicer/quieter sound the large case Dynomax turbo mufflers work great and cost less than flowmasters.

H-pipe as close to the manifold/headers as you can get.

I am on board with going knock-off Flowmaster mufflers. No sense in paying a premium for a name.

I have always been a flowmaster fan since they dont make blue streak glasspacks anymore , (different sound than today's packs). I went with a set of moroso spiral flows with 2 1/2 pipe with header's on my blazer , and it sounds bad ass (not quiet though). Deeper than flows and not as rappy but you have to like loud. Way better sounding than todays packs of any brand IMO. I never do crossover pipes because when I break things , I dont want to drop the exhuast to get at them , I dont think the sound or power gain is worth it but thats just me. I always run high dollar header's and have a shop do my exhaust , never have used premade stuff because I want my pipe's ran the way I want them.

I found the a kit that runs the exhaust where I want made by Dynomax at JEGS.com.

http://www.jegs.com/i/Dynomax/289/89004/10002/-1

Its about $120 which is cheaper that any stock replacement or build your own kits I have found. I only chose Flow masters because they don't use fiberglass so the muffler wont get louder over time. I may use the glass packs on the truck just to save money. I'm also not sure if I can fit a cross pipe due to the transfer case. Its hard to tell what it will sound like because the previous owner did such a bad job attaching the packs. The carb just developed an issue where its holding the truck wide open all the time so I'm on hold building till I fix this.
