I’m putting money on they’re fouled. But that doesn’t make sense on why it would be running so rich to foul plugs that quickly. Unless the carb still has problems. I leaned it out and it wouldn’t run if you recall. When the rain slows I’ll go pull a plug or a few

Spark plug from #1 cylinder. Smells like fuel. Plug is black. Best I could get in freezing rain. Also put the plug back in and tried to crank with choke first and had no luck so then no choke and it sputtered a little like maybe two cylinders fired then nothing so gave up and came back inside.

thats pretty dirty, I have a hunch a new set of plugs and she will fire off, tryo to use the choke as little as possible to hopefully keep the plugs from fouling up, a wire brush might clean them up enough to run

Should I yank the plugs out clean them and see if she’ll run?
Edit: could float height cause it to run too rich? I never changed float height from what my buddy had it at and I highly doubt he ever set it.

I'd put new plugs in it unless you can blast those clean. Check gaps at .045.

Yes, float height can cause it to run rich. The reason the choke isn't helping it start is because its already rich to begin with.

Scratch cleaning the r43ts plugs, I broke the ceramic on two of them taking them out so I went to the parts truck and took the r45ts plugs out of it and I’m cleaning them now to see if that’ll work. I have a brand new set coming if amazon ever ships my order… lol. I’m just using a brass wire brush and cleaning the carbon off to see if it’ll spark off. But I wish it would slow down on the rain I’m soaked and I’d rather not take a carb apart in the rain lol

Well believe it or not… with these plugs in the truck fired first crank no choke nothing. It even idled but it’s backfiring like crazy and you can NOT touch the throttle or it instantly backfires and dies.

Edit: I believe it’s running richer than Jeff bezos. I’ll attempt to set float height with a 7/16” drill bit. That’s the only thing I haven’t touched in the carb. This video is the second crank since I didn’t record the first since I didn’t have high hopes. It actually started faster the first time lol. It’s puffing a lot out of the carb while cranking. Is timing too advanced as well?
Edit 2: watching video back looks like my new exhaust manifold gaskets are junk. You can see the backfire blow through them.

disconnect the vacum advance and plug it off at the carburator, verify your timing

Could a non functional vacuum advance cause a vacuum leak? Or would it just be plugging vacuum? It’s now pouring rain again I can’t do anything right now it sucked enough changing plugs in the rain but it’s really coming down now

Yes, any blown out vacuum device can be a vacuum leak. You should be setting initial timing with the vacuum advance disconnected and plugged on the carb side anyways. I would highly recommend the second you get the thing to start and idle below 1000rpm, you properly set the initial timing to 4-8 degrees BTDC and then not touch it again. You have so many moving targets on this engine that it becomes really hard to troubleshoot anything. Set one thing properly and then leave it alone. Move on to troubleshooting and setting the next thing properly and then lock it down and move on.

I had timing set at 10 or 12 I can’t remember. But it was with vac advance plugged but dad has since touched the distributor again. I can set it back to 10 and tighten down and leave it at that. But I don’t think the vac advance works. I couldn’t suck hard enough for any visible movement. But I also might’ve been looking in wrong area. Can I just cap off vac advance for time being? I do have a parts truck I could nab a distributor out of if need be. Is the drill bit method the easiest way of setting float height? And if float height doesn’t fix it should I attempt different jets and rods again?

The end with the 90 goes on the cap. They are usually labeled and are different types of connectors. You can definitely just disconnect and plug the vacuum advance and it should run fine.
