Looking for confirmation here as to whether purchase of a new Eaton MLocker is even an option for my rig. Seems like it would be, but my inquiries to Eaton and its closest retailer have been unsuccessful. Eaton’s website has a recommendation function but it only points me to its aftermarket options like the TrueTrac.

The reason I am asking is because I am considering replacing my open differential with something that provides more traction in slippery conditions. The problems I’m having tend to be moving from a stopped position on loose gravel or snow/ice. From what I’ve read, the MLocker/G80 is well suited for dealing with those problems.

This forum seems to have plenty of strong opinions about the G80, both for and against. Regardless, GM continues to put the MLocker in its trucks. That’s why it’s on my list of options to consider.

Mine is a 1980 RWD with a 12-bolt cover. It’s a daily driver on 80% pavement. Tires are Michelin Defender LTX M/S2.

I think the truetrac would suit your needs. Not sure if the G80 is available aftermarket

Personally I’d go with a clutch type limited slip, Yukon dura grip or similar, or the Eaton “posi” (same thing).

They can be “adjusted” with different springs and playing with the clutch packs to have the desired amount of preload.

I installed a duragrip in an 05 ram 2500(AAM 11.5), 14b semi float for a 75 blazer, and in my own 79 12 bolt.

After checking with several prominent retailers, I’ve concluded that Eaton doesn’t allow the MLocker to be sold on the aftermarket.

Probably because people abuse them and there would be a ton of litigation over it. Some members on here have run them without issues but they are also not driving their trucks in a manner that would compromise the locker.

Considering how many G80s I've seen explode themselves, even on easy driven trucks, no way I'd consider that. I'm with Spencer, I personally like clutch type differentials. I have a Yukon Duragrip in both my trucks and it's great. Locks up when you put the power down, is seamless in operation and quiet as can be. And also budget friendly

im more convinced its because of the fact they have an exlusive contract with GM, meaning that GM is probably the only seller of the parts
Or possibly AAM

Is it part of the gear "gearset" idk how it works the best

from the looks of it, best way is to source axle with mlocker then R^R the unit, which has service kits
may as well get a LSD or another kind of locker to use in your axle ,since anything you delibereltyy seek out may fit your needs better

but the mlocker (g80, govbomb) is fine for what its meant for

my bad, you have a 12 bolt. id personally say go to a 14 bolt SF or Full float, and skip the g80 into your 12 iirc 12 bolts had kinda weak g80

BUT You have a C10, and dont use it heavy. so maybe you do want one. for your conditions id say a lighter duty limited slip

The MLocker, G80, Gov-Loc, Gov-Bomb... whatever you want to call it, gets a deserved bad rap. So many of them fail in spectacular fashion under normal circumstances.

Now with that said, the larger units do seem to be more reliable, especially the 14ff version. The 14sf version is questionable. The 8.5" 10b version is a ticking time bomb in full size trucks, but they do seem to hold up better in the little ZR2 S10's.

Thanks everyone for your advice. G80/MLocker is no longer an option I’m considering. I’m leaning now towards the TrueTrac but I want to keep researching to better understand the pros and cons versus a clutch type lsd.

Thanks again.

The trutrac is a Tosen style traction device. Would be my choice if a selectable locker is not in play.
