speed limit on highways was 55mph back then. you'd be amazed at the mpg you can get driving 55mph, even in a brick, compared to cruising at 70-75+ mph today.
Also I completely agree with this thinking and what @Bextreme04 is saying.

Also besides the wind drag there is gear ratio to consider. I'm sure the truck in the ad has a high ratio so it would effect that truck less, but for guys with 4.10's and no over drive with factory height tires your turning 2,400RPM at 55 MPH. Already past the RPM you'd likely see the best mileage at. But at 70 MPH you'd be turning almost 3,200RPM, great for power, that RPM could be held all day by a SMC and power production would be great, but it drink gas at those RPMs. So just another little bit of food for thought....

My best guess on the numbers they are showing on the sales brochure are for the 6.2 diesel. I might be wrong but I believe the 6.2 was first available in 1982. The

The sales brochure was really pushing the fuel economy claimed with the 6.2, available with the (also new to 1982) four speed overdrive manual transmission ( A833 ). I will try to dig out my old sales brochure from 1982 and see if I can see if it says those numbers are from that particular engine transmission combo.

Look at his sales brochure again. It specifically says the 5.0L which would be the 305, now since none of us including Keith has seen these high of estimates before it could be a mis-printed brochure that was never meant for public consumption. Who knows...

No not a misprint, I got it from two different sources. I'm guessing 305, different cam qjet,NV833 transmission,2.41 gears driven nice at 55 mph. I have never Been able to find legitimate specs on this truck. GM advertised it 1981 or 82 as special fuel economy model, but I cannot find what that consisted of.

Well FWIW it wasn't the first time I'd seen that ad and wasn't looking for it but it popped up on a different forum and as I said I've never been able to find any details on this. Well on the other forum somebody stepped up and said his dad had one and no B.S. it got 20+ mpg. The combo is 305 qjet,O.D. manual transmission, 205/75/15 tires. 2.73 rear gears he says it wasn't a good hauler (surprise) but it would fly on the highway. I still wonder how they were jetted, cammed, and what heads. But I know more than I did before. Wow I just did the math. 2.73 with a .73 4th gear is a 1.99 final drive, these trucks just idled everywhere.

Well that's pretty cool then. Unfortunately fueleconomy.gov only goes back to 84. I'd say I'd want one, but a 1/2 ton with that kind of gearing would not work well for me at all. But just goes to show a carbureted vehicle CAN get good mileage.

@SirRobyn0 Oldsmobile had a big block 2bbl, special cammed 2.56 geared cutlass that got 23 mpg 1967-1970? But a Cutlass is a lot more aerodynamic than our trucks. Turn pike cruiser was the package name. If they could pull maximum torque in high gear they had a theoretical top speed of 150 mph.LOL Pre overdrive, carbureated car. Interesting to see the milage hits it takes at different speeds.

Best mileage I ever got out of a truck was my 2002 Dodge 3500 DRW, going west out of Laramie on I-80 headed for Rawlins. Going downhill in 4th gear of a 6 spd NV5600, Jake brake on, being pushed by a triple axle GN trailer empty weight 5500.
