Dash pad interchangeability?

I though the only differences in the bezels were the finish and the different openings for the switches depending on year.

Nope they are a different shape.

The 81-87 dash comes forward on the top half of the bezel where as the pre 80 is more or less flat from top to bottom

Bumping this old thread to add some pics to the info.

This is a 70's pad on an '83 dash and bezel. The pad itself fits fine, but the far left clip goes unused due to the speaker opening. And clearly, the top of the bezel is not a good match for the pad at all (but it does fit) so a 70's bezel is needed to match. Going the other way should work fine though (80's pad and 70's bezel).

Yep, I have one of those bezels on my 74 beater, fits but looks like ****, lol..
