Cruise control release switch

Hello all,

This is my first post - been a long time follower though. I have a 1990 suburban with the 5.7 and the th400. The cruise control suddenly stopped working completely the other day.

I replaced the stalk switch because it looked worn out anyways and was the easiest/cheapest to replace. But no luck.

I don't think the servo would suddenly stop working altogether - though I could be wrong. I've verified that there is vacuum in the reservoir and the check valve works.

When looking around under the dash, I noticed that there are two brake pedal activated switches. Are the brake light and cruise control switches separate? Would functioning brake lights mean that the switch is working? Is there a chance that the switch is stuck open releasing all the vacuum?

Not sure about your’s but my 79 has a bad release switch and any little bump in the road will rattle the switch and turn the cruise off. Mine are separate switches if I recall correctly.

There are separate switches. One with vacuum hose is for cruise

Does anyone happen to know the part number the cruise switch is? The only thing I can find is the stoplight w/ cruise switch. Is it just two of these? One for brakes and one for the cruise?

Looks like my picture didn't load - I pasted a picture of part. STANDARD MOTOR PRODUCTS SLS153. There are two types that look similar - one for cruise and one without. I might just pull them out to get a better look but don't see how the vacuum hose connects to the switch.

Hello again, its been awhile since I've had time to work at this problem but I'm at it again. Since my last post I pulled the switch, realized I purchased the wrong switch, and realized that they don't make the switch I need anymore. Has anyone gone through looking for the 156000278 cruise switch?

I've seen several interchangeable part numbers listed but none seem readily available. i guess Ill just wait until one comes up on ebay unless someone has a secret source for these.

The only result I get on ebay is a wall mounted peacock taxidermy which is actually pretty cool. If it weren't two grand I would probably just get that and not worry about cruise control...

I have been trying to keep a stash of them because they were impossible to find last time I looked. Not sure how many I have at this point, but can start searching if no other sources come up. Maybe lmc or brothers truck have it and I just never found it.

Had that issue in my 84 model. Turns out it was bad grounds. Test the switch you are thinking about replacing for continuity. Be sure all your grounds including the battery posts and cable are clean and tight

Here is what you need. Part # S749 BWD Cruise Switch at Advance Auto. 22 bucks

If yours is the different style (the longer version) then you need the Borg Warner S749 version. It's 49 bucks on Amazon.
