Ok well I just talked to the guy that built my motor and he said the compression is 9.7:1 and ive been running it on 87 octane and he said I should be using 93. So im gonna try that after work to see what happens ill let you guys know.

Just so you know, your engine isnt high enough compression to require 93. You could get by on regular 87-89. Im currently finishing up my monte, it has a 355 @10.5:1, and im running it on 87(e10). No ping.

As I was fiddling around last night, I was checking my headers and on the fron of my block just below the bottom of the header is black soot. I assume its from the exhaust? It wipes off, so im gonna chaulk it up to an exhaust leak. If you guys want ill see if the soot is there again and if it is, ill snap some photos.

My 305 has headers and I had the same problem. I thought my engine was about to grenade. Mine is an 87 but the engine is from an 84 and of unknown history. I dropped the pan and the oil pickup fell out..... so I was a little skeptical on the engine.

Rev it and it would rattle a bit. It got worse one day and I was like here we go.... But I tightened the header bolts which were very loose at this point and she runs like a top.

Yup they are aluminum layered header gaskets. Bought em from auto zone. They have round and square ports. Choose what works for you. Any hoo I've taken them off and put em back on 4 times so far for other reasons. And they still seal perfect

For what it's with I had those very same gaskets to begin with and they are terrible. Put some chalk our something around that gasket and see what it does

I was just out cruising and I put the truck in park and reved it up and held it for a second I probably had it at 2k rpms and I could hear a very faint tick, I mean very faint. But just at idle I dont hear anything. I mean there isnt any loss of power or a drop in oil pressure. I just really hope this turns out to just be the header. Ive got all my money into this engine and cant afford to have someone look at it.
