Can you use an inline fuel pump for a tbi setup?

Ok well Oreillys and advance both quoted me $45 bucks for the fuel pump for an 87 and I specifically asked them if it was the entire thing with the sending unit and all, they said yes. Then I go to get it and all it is is the pump, like I suspected. The entire assembly is $250, like I suspected.

Idiots.

So they said that the tank that the 87 pump shows to work in is a 31 gallon tank. Will it drop in my dads 16 gallon tank?

No, the 31 gallon tank is the Burb/Blazer tank.

oreilys advance autozone all of them don't know anything.

look it up online and find the part you need and buy it.

if your dad's truck is a short bed it's 16 gallon and you need a sending unit/fuel pump assy. from an 87 since it has tbi. If his is a long bed it may be either a 16 or 24 I think it is tank.

Look at lmc they have them, IMO try rockauto and/or amazon they have the best prices. I just bought my 88 sending unit for $50, it won't work for yours though, mines the gmt400 not a squarebody platform. If you have to buy the pump seperate if it's cheap enough then do it.

If not then junkyard time my friend, find a truck find a tbi setup and get what you need.

so I did some checking for you...

http://www.autozone.com/autozone/pa...-U-2WD/Fuel-Tank-Sending-Unit/_/N-iigfvZ8vdfx

same deal on their website and I bet same for oreilys.

now the thing to do is this..

take their part numbers, for example..

FG05M

go to amazon, select automotice, enter that number into the search and then see if they have it cheaper, in my case they did.

Also go to rockauto.com and find the sending unit for an 87 r10 with a 350tbi.

then use their 5 percent discount code they have listed on this site and get 5 percent off the order.

Compare the prices, find the fuel pump as well, buy them both, or use those numbers for your local parts store. If you want/have to buy local give them that number and buy it from them. By that number of course I mean the sending unit you want to buy and the pump.

Thanks for the research. What I still don't understand is...did they make an 87 truck with tbi? Or were they all suburbans? I see the "R-10" notation and I think that means suburban/blazer?

So my question is, if the only fuel pump and sending unit I can get is from an 87 tbi suburban, designed to fit in a 31 gallon tank, with that same exact sender and pump fit in my dads 16 gallon tank?? If so then I'll just buy it from rockauto or whoever has the cheapest price. I'm just confused on WHAT to buy, not where.

I think the burb/blazer tanks are shallower than the saddlebag tanks. It would probably fit, but the gauge would read wrong, maybe 1/4 tank would read empty.

NO NO NO,

they did make an 87 TRUCK TBI I already stated it, pretty much ALL of them in 87 were TBI.

they just changed from c10 to r10 and then from k10 to v10.

The parts I looked up were from a saddle tank, TRUCK, not blazer, not burb, and 87 with TBI.

Ok. I just thought "R" stood for blazer/suburban.

So, Then I can assume that any one of those fuel sending units you looked up will work in the 16 gallon saddle tank?

I would guess so, i entered in for a chevy truck 2wd and it didn't ask for long bed or short, I don't think though long or short matters, the tanks are just longer for the more gallons on the long beds.

I think this is correct, my dad said that lmc didn't show 2 different tanks from tbi to non tbi

Both the long and short tanks use the same sending unit. The '87 tanks actually have internal baffles to battle fuel slosh.

they changed the square designation in 87 to R for 2wd, and V for 4wd, because they were also building the new 88 gmt 400's at the same time, and started selling them in 87, and those became C and K.
same thing happened again in 99.
