Probably replace the actuator. I have heard of them traveling to far then they can't back out. Seems at one time someone had a trick to get those out of 4x4. Like go into N while turing sharp to the left or right on pavement and you could get it to pop out. Do not recall where I heard or seen that suggestion now though.

Probably needs a thermostat. Or a head gasket aint no big deal on a in-line six.

I haven't "stuck it" in a while.
That year truck has the dash swithces right? Not the shifter in the floor?
Some had dash switches and some had a floor shifter.
