Brake Light Socket Issue - ?

My time in the barrel for this one. If you put a new bulb in where the prongs are reversed from where the bulb will hold, it will light up for brake or hazards.

Installed correctly, it will not work- just the tail lamp glows. Since it lights up, I am assuming power/wiring is good and the socket is the issue.

I ordered a socket from LMC - pretty cheap at around 6 bux.

Sound like I am on the right track?

I am at work so cannot do much in the way of diagnostics.

Do you have a test light or multimeter? I would test for power at plug terminals and if nothing then probe wires first before replacing socket. I had to replace one of my sockets this spring because the pot metal conductor gave. Sometimes it's just needing a good scrape to clean.

Tail and brake are different circuits, brake and directional are the same circuit. Signal switch and flasher open and close brake circuit for flash. If that's what you're asking.

I guess what I was asking was that given that I can make the bulb flash if I hold it in place was it safe to assume it was just a socket issue.

Yes, if not too bad the socket can be cleaned. There are new sockets available.

I hate those damn OEM sockets! When I went thru my electrical system I changed every single plug in the harness to weather pack terminals. During that process I also Shtcanned the 1156/1157 sockets and replaced them with modern 3056/57 spade type sockets. No more electrical gremlins for this Chicken Farmer!

OK - how about a solution. Bad (new) bulb. Bought some at O Reallys on the way home as a sudden I wonder ! flash of inspiration.

Of course, it could have been the heat - I had the window down.

But, the new bulb fixed it.
