The 402 was just a .030 over 396. I've never seen a 402 badge and never knew existed. I hated Chevy for doing the 400 badge for 402's. You never knew if it were a SBC400 or a 402.Not sure the 400 sb in 70 Chevelle tho???? Somebody correct me if I'm wrong in my thinking process. Why offer the 402 badged 396 and a 400sb that don't make sense. The 402 was badges 3 ways depending on what they cam in. 396,400 and 402
A body's 396 Impala 400 trucks 402 as listed on spec sheets not sure I've seen 402 badges either sorry I misspoke. The 402 was just a .030 over 396. I've never seen a 402 badge and never knew existed. I hated Chevy for doing the 400 badge for 402's. You never knew if it were a SBC400 or a 402.

Back then was before the oval bore 396s I believe. Lol but I've been known to be wrong. 70 was the first year for the 402.I seem to recall looking at a 66-67 caprice 2 door many years ago with 402 badging.
No there was no factory 402 badging company's make them tho.The 402 was just a .030 over 396. I've never seen a 402 badge and never knew existed. I hated Chevy for doing the 400 badge for 402's. You never knew if it were a SBC400 or a 402.
In 70 the 400 sb was available in the Monte Carlo still an A-body but not a Chevelle.Without a doubt, I know for a fact SBC400 came in passenger cars too, not just trucks. Though, IIRC, the SBC only came in passenger cars for 4 years, but in trucks for 10 years.
You are correct sir. But you could get a sb400 in the Laguna SS with a 4spd. Also you could option the sb400 in the Chevelle and Malibu when they got ugly....I jumped off the Chevelle train after 70 so yeah 71-77 fit in that category. Lol ant I would of said the same thing I just never saw the point in that engine it's like a the performance of a 305 imho with overheating issues. I know people are gonna disagree but it's my opinion and well I'll take the bastard 402 over a sb400 any day of the week and twice on Sunday.I wasn't aware of a Chevelle or Malibu ever getting the SBC400. I was aware it was available in the Monte Carlo for 1 year. I was told that by a Monte Carlo guru who was all giddy about buying an optioned 70 Monte with an OEM SBC400 and I said BFD !!! That was the wrong thing to say to him.
