The 400 was also in a 70 Chevelle, with 3 compression rates. (I don't know them)

Without a doubt, I know for a fact SBC400 came in passenger cars too, not just trucks. Though, IIRC, the SBC only came in passenger cars for 4 years, but in trucks for 10 years.

Not sure the 400 sb in 70 Chevelle tho???? Somebody correct me if I'm wrong in my thinking process. Why offer the 402 badged 396 and a 400sb that don't make sense. The 402 was badges 3 ways depending on what they cam in. 396,400 and 402

The 402 was just a .030 over 396. I've never seen a 402 badge and never knew existed. I hated Chevy for doing the 400 badge for 402's. You never knew if it were a SBC400 or a 402.

I seem to recall looking at a 66-67 caprice 2 door many years ago with 402 badging.

Back then was before the oval bore 396s I believe. Lol but I've been known to be wrong. 70 was the first year for the 402.

Introduced in 1970, the 402-cubic-inch (6.6 L) was a 396-cubic-inch bored out by 0.030 in (0.76 mm). Despite the fact that it was 6 cubic inches (98 cc) larger, Chevrolet continued marketing it under the popular "396" label in the smaller cars while at the same time labeling it "Turbo-Jet 400" in the full-size cars. The 402 label was used in light pickup trucks.

In 70 the 400 sb was available in the Monte Carlo still an A-body but not a Chevelle.

I wasn't aware of a Chevelle or Malibu ever getting the SBC400. I was aware it was available in the Monte Carlo for 1 year. I was told that by a Monte Carlo guru who was all giddy about buying an optioned 70 Monte with an OEM SBC400 and I said BFD !!! :happy175: That was the wrong thing to say to him.

You are correct sir. But you could get a sb400 in the Laguna SS with a 4spd. Also you could option the sb400 in the Chevelle and Malibu when they got ugly....I jumped off the Chevelle train after 70 so yeah 71-77 fit in that category. Lol ant I would of said the same thing I just never saw the point in that engine it's like a the performance of a 305 imho with overheating issues. I know people are gonna disagree but it's my opinion and well I'll take the bastard 402 over a sb400 any day of the week and twice on Sunday.
