In my opinion I don't think you would get much more of a gain from a 496 compared to a 489. To many variables on what you want out of the engine. Style of piston can change the compression ratio as well as rod length.

Most tall decks you can safely go .100

I wouldn't agree 100% with that only because of how close you are to the water jackets. That and how steel shrinks and expands do to heat and cooling could do some serious damage to the rings and pistons over time... just my opinion though.

I don't think so, same lay out as a standard just different deck heights. The tall deck is .400 higher than the standard which you have to use longer connecting rods which gives you more stroke then a standard deck.

2 bolt mains are recommended .060 over standard bore size, 4 bolt mains can be honed .125 over standard bore size.. but isn't recommended do to risk of engine damage.

in the bbc world the low deck is 9.8 from centerline of crank to deck surface, tall deck is 10.2 crank to deck height. Also have .400 longer rods and pushrods. WHY? monster torque builder. We built a 505 bbc using a 427 tall block, with .100 over bore and .250 stroker crank. The lower end of the water jackets were grouted to stiffen them. Used for super/gas super/comp car. Peak Hp of 812 was in under 6200 rpm, really close to the launch and shift points. I copied it not my writing

I thought factory talldeck motors used the extra space for a taller piston with an extra ring. I was under the impression the connecting rods were the same length as a short deck motor
