Oy, I can smell all the landlubber cr@p coming from miles away. Gilligan's Island references coming any minute now.

The wood issue is probably an issue. The fact that you're calling the lower unit a "foot" tells me you're venturing into new territory. Lots of pitfalls here, but possibly potential for someone who knows what they're looking at and knows whether they're getting in too deep or not.

My first question: Who made it?
I don’t know who made it. And yes, this is new territory for me. Never really been a boat guy. But I do know that boat stands for Bring Out Another Thousand.

If they didn't have enough pride in their products to put their name on it that's a problem right there. If you look at the upper right side of the transom (that's the back end) there should be a number cast into the hull. The first few characters should identify the builder.

That's the HIN, kind of like VIN. Hull Identification Number. Started in 1973, just like our squares.

He did say it came with a title. Would that information not be on a title for a boat?

Bust out another thousand! ($). The company my dad worked for, the owners kid had a 60 ft cigar boat with twin big blocks in it! Every weekend hed go out thrashing (breaking) it and bring it back in during the week and make my dad and the other guys fix it. And no the company wasnt in the marine industry! Like clock work on monday afternoon dad would come home and tell us, so this weekend mark went out here and destroyed this and now wants us to fix it!

Scuttlebutt says The boat came into its current condition after the previous owner compared it to a coast guard cutter when stopped for drug smuggling

They weren’t taking any prisoners that day

my thoughts.....grab the motor, cut the console out, grab all motor controls/cables.....leave the rest. Find a cheap 16' + john boat with a trailer. Install console, or trade your motor for a tiller motor.

That’s probably my best bet. I think I’ll pass on this potential headache.

Make sure you pull that motor. Get you a pair of rabbit ears and hook up to a hose. Get it running good then pull it and sell it. A v6 outboard is worth some money.

Or look for a good boat with a bad motor and swap them out.

Nope, the SS Minnow has run aground here. It's been there as long as I can remember.

i'd still grab the parts I mentioned. Look for a jon boat that doesn't have a motor....they are normally a lot cheaper because they don't have a motor. Use that motor or try to fix it up and sell it like they mentioned. Use that to get safety gear for the boat you bought, or other stuff that's needed on it.

For those saying put it on a jon boat, it would have to be a wide, 16-18’ boat. That engine is probably a 115-135hp giver take.
OP
IF you get the engine running smooth and verified
IF the lower unit and prop is not trashed (they don’t get taken off because nothing is wrong)
If the throttle and steering cables are good
If the throttle control is good
If edit… tilt cylinders are good
If there’s no damage to the hull and
If you can get a trailer for basically free, then that boat might be worth fixing up to make seaworthy.

In its current state it’s worth about -$500 or whatever it would cost to have someone come out and skid it onto a rollback and haul to the dump

Bottom line, it’s not going on the water next week or likely next month based on the pics. And even with all the Covid boaters, you can find a clean cheap runabout in the fall that isn’t a 5 alarm mess like that one.

Engine and controls are worth about 95% of the value of any old power boat.
