my clutch stacks on the sides appeared to have died, based on the TERRIBLE whining, and the tons of slop between R&P (minimal) to actual axle shaft output, not to mention the magnet was covered in clutch dust. this is probably because i ****** up and didnt add the friction modifier, whatever.

if anyone has an insight on this, i would love a tutorial, ive never done it. seems just as easy as stacking new clutch plates, and aiming for a set amount of gear play, no? someone fill me in on this. i can make it this weekends project and move on with my life. i know *someone* has because i saw a post about it somewhere, so the knowledge exists no doubt.

thanks peeps

I havent found jack **** on servicing the G80 gov lock on the internet, just thinking I'm gonna go with yukon posi, or a true trac since a GM 8.5" grizzly locker doesnt exist anymore apparently

It’s an Eaton unit I believe and there are rebuild kits available for pretty cheap on jegs and summit. I’ve got one in the factory rear of our 2011 Suburban behind a 5.3L at 180,000 miles including trailer towing through the cascades. Never had an issue with it, so they can’t be that bad. I’d say rebuild it and run the right fluid and move on.

Okay Vince, here you go. I haven't rebuilt one in a while but I can get you started. When the clutches are not applied the rear works like an open differential. This is great if you drive like mom and pop. If you lock them hard under lots of throttle to many times they start to self destruct.

The service issue is after you remove the cross pin the spider gears still have no room to be removed. So you have to remove the governor locking parts to disassemble the rest of the unit. They can and will refuse to remove easily. I modified a Big "C" clamp to remove the collar stump.

Since the governor gets beat up, I chop a chunk of it out. The foot end of the C clamp with a notch cut in it, slide it in. With a socket or short piece of pipe on the swivel foot of the clamp gives room to push the piece out.

Like @Bextreme04 said, by the time you purchase all the parts.... clutches, steels, clips, governor parts and many times the side gears and spider gears that are worn, just get a new aftermarket locker or limited slip of your choice.

Here’s a link to a step-by-step for a guy doing an 8” G80... looks almost identical

Hey thanks for this data, so i see my time and money isnt even worth it at all when i could just have a new traction unit and skip the rebuilding for slightly more dough.

why is the yukon locker so cheap on Amazon and almost 2x the cost on summit or other sources?

I am still rocking my G80. it works fine for me and I like my truck too much to purposefully beat it up.....but if it ever blows I will replace it with something better.

let me know if it is all you needed or if there are other parts required. at that price I may get one and leave it on the shelf for a rainy day...
