Anyone ever rebuilt a 8.5" G80 unit?

I think at the point you look at "rebuilding" a g80 I think I would rather get an open diff and put one of those Yukon Sparttan lockers in it. Might not be beefy for hardcore offroad stuff but I am certain it is fine for daily driving and occasional offroad duty.

That should work. Can you still slide the cross pin in/out easily?

That was a Gov Lok too. It's not locked by a Governor no more. It's locked though.

His isn't the Gov Lok if he has clutches in it. There were some Suburbans that got Limited Slip Diffs and the RPO Code was still G80. @89Suburban had a limited slip in his 89 Burb.

The light duty Gov Locks do have clutches. The factory G80 Gov-Lock for a 10-bolt is an Eaton MLocker and they have the clutches behind the spider gears inside the carrier. Here's a cool video(from Eaton) on how it works with the internal cut-away showing the clutch packs.

Good to know I guess. I wasn't aware the Gov Lok had clutches in it. I thought it was all a mechanical locking mechanism by the wheel, cam, spring ano hardware. I didn't even pull 1 apart. Simply **** canned it and carry on. I did buy an 80 C1500 that had the Gov Lok and to my surprise it still worked and it worked good too. That was one of few of the good ones I think.

It's important to note that the 8.5/8.6" G80 and 14 bolt G80 are completely different designs. I think the 14 BFF gov lock gets such a bad rap BECAUSE it doesn't have any clutch packs, so when it slams into "lock" it blows the spiders apart. I am still having a hard time understanding what exactly happened to @Vbb199's unit. The clutches wearing out "shouldn't" have allowed the side spider gears to move out and develop all that slop. The side gears aren't held in tension against the center support by the clutches... maybe just worn out due to hard mileage??

I was aware the 14b FF G80 was totally different. Usually easily figured out by the cone shape carrier. I've not heard near the complaints on that one that I have the 10 bolts have had. I don't care for either one of those in the 10/12 bolt or the 14b FF. I've always preferred lockers like Detroit Lockers where there are no clutches to wear out. Some people just don't like being locked up full time and the bang or shudder to break loose on turns. I do like the Eaton and Auburn limited slip systems if I bought a vehicle and it came with it but if I'm buying a traction system, I'm buying lockers. Limited Slip is opposite of a locker. It's unlocked full time until variable wheel spin is detected, then it'll sorta lock up. Both certainly have their advantages and disadvantages but I'll tolerate the disadvantages of a locker all day long to have the advantages.
