Anybody modify the 4x10 speaker mounts in the back?

I have some of those 4x10" speaker mounts in the back corners of my cab. Not sure if the trucks came with them or not. Anyway they're not even made for a modern 4x10" speaker, because the magnet is too big. So has anyone cut these up and made other speakers fit? I'm trying to see if I can save $40 on buying some new brackets. Thank you

Modify them. What do you have to lose? The good thing about steel is you can always fix it. I had to build my own rear speaker mounts for 6 x 9s. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

I modified mine to accommodate 6x9’s using the existing mounting locations with no magnet issues.

A little "snippin' and tin bangin'" saves you 40 bucks. This truck didnt have anything for rear speakers. I also put some little 4 inch under the dash. They didn't fit perfect cut a few self drilling screws holds them nicely.

Bought a set of speakers from Crutchfield that only required slight modification to the bracket. I am not big on amps or anything approaching huge sound, but they are better than OEM.

Retrosounds from Crutchfield using stock speakers sound pretty good. So…. if you are going to change the corner speakers, are you changing the dash speakers as well?

I put Kicker 47KSC41004 speakers that fit the stock 4x10 location in the back of my suburban. they do pretty well for a 4x10.....

You say the magnet is too big. Will it not fit through the hole or does it hit the cab?
If it won't fit try putting the speaker in from the back side.

Yes, these trucks came with the 4x10 speaker mounts. Those are for the factory speakers, and you're right about most modern 4x10s not fitting correctly. The first hack for the factory speaker mounts is swapping the left and right sides. This angles the speakers a little more towards the back of the seat, instead of towards the front of the cab, but it allows for the bigger magnets to fit in the corner.

The mounts can be trimmed for 6x9 speakers. If that's done, there will be very little metal left to connect the top and bottom halves of the mount. The speaker itself sort of becomes an integral part of the structure.

I recently put the same Kicker 47KSC41004 speakers in my K20 (no dash speakers yet). I agree that they do pretty well for 4x10's but they are not as good as comparable quality 6x9's. That's a fact. I didn't feel like trimming my mounts to the extreme for 6x9 speakers, and I also wanted to keep the factory grill covers. They do a good job protecting the speakers from cased shotguns that can slide around behind the seat.

Even the 4x10 Kicker 47KSC41004's required me to swap left and right side mounts to accommodate the larger magnets, and I had to trim the opening in the mount a little bit to get the speakers to sit flush in the mount. I think they also required a couple new holes. The main benefit was being able to use the factory grill covers. That was high on my priority list.

With the Kicker 47KSC41004 4x10 speakers, the magnet would hit the cab until I swapped left and right side speaker mounts.

Great info guys. Easton wants a full Kicker system. Wants 6X9” behind seat with a stand up 10” sub. We decided to put 6” speakers in the lower door panels and skip the dash speaker altogether. 5 channel kicker AMP under seat.

Randy and Easton, Pardon me if I go a little off topic here. As a 30 Year Firefighter with experience responding to countless vehicle collisions, I know first hand that young drivers and loud stereo systems don’t mix.
Drivers have so many distractions that contribute to traffic accidents, Booming Kicker style stereos are #1
Drivers, especially the young and inexperienced Play their radios loud and often Never hear warning horns from other cars, or Sirens and Air Horns from Emergency Vehicles.
I’m not trying to preach, only to add my perspective as a First Responder who hopes that every young driver returns home safely.
I have a niece and 2 nephews around Easton’s age and I often give the same advice…”The loud music can wait” Yes I’m a protective uncle, and I’ll proudly wear that badge. I’ve checked their brakes on occasion and even snuck Fire extinguishers into their cars
I hope this response is well received and you can understand where I’m coming from. I have no doubt that when I was 16 I played my Kraco speakers too loud.
