O'Reilly special, about 50 bucks.
Can't drive the truck an hour until the fuel pump gets hot and starts to vapor lock and won't pump gas to the carburetor.
When it takes me two hours to get to the city to shop, lots of running around and another two hour trip to get home, it just isn't going to cut it .................

Is there an issue with the mechanical pump? Probably a lot cheaper in the long run if you can still run it and in many ways more reliable. The problem with many cheap external pumps is that they overheat, and in a lot of circumstances, even high dollar pumps suffer from the same problem.

I won't run the mechanical pump for two reasons:
1) The cam lobe that runs the pushrod is soft and worn down and it makes a ticking sound from excessive end play the whole time the engine is running, and 2) I have seen the diaphragm in mechanical pumps fail and pour raw gas into the engine oil.

So in the past year, almost to the date, I have been through 3 mechanical fuel pumps. I finally got fed up and went with a Carter P4070.

Except I got it for $20 cheaper two weeks ago.

I installed in inline fuel pressure gauge, and I am running at a constant 4.5 psi.

This has fixed all my stupid ******* fuel issues. All the mechanical pumps would put out too much pressure anyways.

The pump is mounted on the frame next to the tank switching solenoid.
Reason being is electric fuel pumps push better than they pull as where the mechanical ones pull better than they push.
And as for my reason number two, I have SO MANY weird things happen to me I won't take the chance of ruining a good engine from gas getting into the oil.

I suspect the chuckling was in regards to the language used to describe the fuel issues.

Arp/Moroso fuel pump rod is the best bet with a Holley mechanical fuel pump. i’ve never had luck with electric fuel pumps for many reasons being from wiring, to pushing or pulling fuel, to not being the right height, and others. holley fuel pump hasnt let me down and my truck has a big Comp Cam camshaft in it. i don’t have any problems nor have i heard of it wearing the rod down especially on a ARP or Moroso rod. just my say.

How/where is the pump mounted? Should be at or below the bottom of the tank. Even then, it’ll live longer if you keep the tank topped up.

As stated earlier, most external 12v pumps aren’t great. The only one that’s lasted me longer than a year wasn’t on a square body, but my dual Weber vw. Bummer that mechanical isn’t an option for you. It’s typically more reliable.

The external pumps need an inline pressure regulator and gauge. After adjusting pressure, you should check volume.. Inadequate volume was my problem once my pump was throttled back to ~5psi on my square body. I was having header related issues too, but the e pump only made my fuel problems worse. I should’ve stuck with the old mechanical one.
