thinking of adding basic AFR gauge to my 84 454 with Qjet & dual exh for purpose of tuning; don't need wide-band; where should the sensor(s) be installed? (and would having one on each branch be necessary?)
.
(fwiw i run one on my MGB race car at the header collector point & it has been helpful in tuning & jetting the 45DCOE)

Generally there is no need to run dual O2 sensors. You certainly could add a bung on each bank, but a good average from just one bank is sufficient.

It would be best to verify with the specific gauge/sensor, 6-12” from the collector flange is generally what I have done and seems to work fine.

What’s a good AFR gauge that won’t break the bank?

i ran a wideband dual sensor setup on my 3.2 porsche; there are some caveats related to early sensor failures $$$ ... best to install a delay relay so the sensor gets warmed up before it gets electrically activated .. . you can prob'ly google that idea; its on the porsche forums & others

...
no need for wideband on a carbureted engine

... i did run a dual narrow band on the porsche when it had a earlier weber carbed engine; i just wired it sensor to a toggle on dash so i could switch between ... very useful for tuning webers

I also have one of the Innovate systems on one bank of a small block stroker motor. I am pleased with it but it kills a sensor about once a year. I've read that the newer ones have better sensor management for a longer life. Mine is probably 8 to 10 years old.

There should be a minimum of 2.5 pipe diameters of straight distance before the exhaust encounters the sensor for best results.
