The best thing to do, even with old SBC, is to just put the engine at TDC before disassembly and then mark where the distributor is in relation to the intake and where the rotor is in relation to the distributor before you remove it. Then you only have to put it back to the exact spot it was when removed when you reassemble it.
I'll go you one further,I've said this on other posts but it never hurts to say it again.On anything I pull the distributor on, I point the rotor straight to the fire wall,and mark the lip of 5he distributor online with the rotor. Since I do that everytime on any engine, I can walk back up to it 20 years later and as long as the motor hasn't been cranked I can install the distributor 1st try everytime.Even if you swapped manifolds its still 1st try everytime.
