I actually had a local machine shop press out the old studs and press in the new and everything was good to go. If I did it myself with the hammer I can see how I may have done something to damage them but the shop did a clean install.
Wheel spins freely as well, no binding or grinding or any caught ups or bearing issues. It definitely is dangerous, I haven't drove it since the last time it happened. I fixed it and got it home and its sat there since.
Hopefully someone can shed some light on this odd situation.
