You could probably actually keep the hood on since the hinges attach to the inner fender. Not sure what it'd do to the hood, though, if the clip twists a little bit upon removal

I would figure if the hood is closed and latched it should be fine, but I don;t know personally, just going by what I have seen pics of.....

On 73-80 hood hinges mount to the fenders, but 81-87 the hood hinges on the cowl and the spring is mounted to the fender.
73-80 hinge and spring are one unit.
81-87 hinge and spring are two seperate units mounted apart.
