Once you find your compression ratio based on chamber size, dome size and deck height then you can make an educated decision on a cam. Your gonna need to find out where the pistons are gonna sit in the holes.

If I were shopping for heads for a torque monster 496, I'd look at the AFR 265 heads. Some will see this and say what???!!! But if you research the flow numbers, they flow VERY WELL up to .600 lift and port velocity stays WAY UP. These heads would work very well with a 496 and a cam with say [email protected] on intake and [email protected] on exhaust with lift in the .550 range. I've witnessed these exact heads on a 496 built for street use and they are incredible.

Appreciate the info, this by first complete engine rebuild so I am not to knowledgeable kind of learning as I go. Out of curiosity what are you thinking the hp and torque specs will be for a 496 stroker? I have a feeling I'm going to be rebuilding the transmission as well.

Those heads are badass, but they actually work better on a 468 which they were designed for, but still a good deal on a 496..

It should be real easy to go north of 400hp and 500tq, and quite a bit over those numbers if you so desire. Yes, your tranny will need it too. lol

6.2 replacement.
Mostly just stock and not in a show truck but, I like it. Just clears the hood.

Isn't that the point of using a tall block? Not like 496 isn't enough.


Also 781 oval heads will work very well with at least over size exhaust valves and open up the throats and knock out
a bun ch of the valve guide bosses. But also, this is where these heads like to rack when overheated (towing) so beware.

A good block can go .100 over from what I've heard, but that's pushing the limit. I'd say the advantage of using an oem tall deck is it allows for longer connecting give a better rod stroke ratio. And I believe you can get some cranks with a 4.375 stroke but that's not for the faint of heart when it comes time to clearance the block.

Early tall decks can go .125 over easy as long as there isn't too much core shift, if you plan on going .125 definitely have it sonic checked first, .100 no problem..

Well I got the stroker kit for the 427 tall deck, thing is the pistons with the kit are 4.310 bore 60 over. The guy boring my block suggested i go with 4.280 bore pistons instead, in case something goes wrong the block can still be rebored. I am new to this and looking for any input or thoughts on what I should do.

Seams odd to me does he do his own boring or does he send it out. I'm pretty sure they come up with price by the amount of passes to achieve desired bore. And they don't take a bunch out at a time do to over heating the tooling. Or maybe his equipment won't go that big and isn't honest enough to tell you and he would have to pay someone else to do it. Just a few thoughts.
