With my combo I don't think I have much to worry about. I nice well prepped 700R4 will just fine for my needs. I really appreciate all the feedback and info on the trannys, you guys are great! As a refresher, my engine combo is a .060 over 350, 10:1 compression w/ a Comp XE268 hyd flat tappet. Roller rockers, Dart Iron Eagle SS Vortech heads w/2.02's, Summit Stage 3 Vortech intake and a Eddy 600. I have a stock HEI dizzy for now.

As I am also looking to build a 350 for my 79 I've been reading through this thread. This may be a stupid question (and by no means looking to thread jack) but when I think of "Vortec" I think of newer Chevy motors. Would Vortec heads work on an old carbed 350?

Vortec heads

Vortec heads will fit on an older model block but you will need to use an intake for vortec heads because the intake bolt patterns are different.

...just to add to this, Vortec heads up to I believe 96' or 97'....maybe its
99', IDK. But the modern Vortec engine(LS based...like those in trucks, vans & SUV's do not fit the older small blocks.

Vortec engines

Vortec engines started in 1996 and ran though 2000 in full size trucks, Yukons, Tahoes and Suburbans. Up to 2002 in full size vans.
