My vote is for the 305. I know they make poor power but they live forever. Most 305 have not been abused like a 350 because people don't use them in projects where they want to make big power. You can get them or parts dirt cheap, sometimes even free from marketplace. Most 350 parts will bolt on so you have a limitless bolt on options if you want to invest the money. The other plus side to having the 305 is later on if you want to change out to a 350 its extremely easy to swap it out.

That's a very good point. When I engine swapped my '84, I had a good running (but smoked on full throttle) 305 with all accessories, still bolted to the working TH350 (but no reverse until warmed up) that was sitting around in my way. I posted it on CL for a very cheap price (60 bucks I think) for a quick sale. After just a day or two, a nice fella with a '68 C20 came and bought it to use in his truck.

305 deals are definitely out there.

isnt that just moronic, the y pipe ends in a 2.5 but they still choke it down to 2.25 for no reason other than DURR

my oldsmobile aurora had the y pipe end at a 3.0 and the mufflers, which were 30 inches away, pinched down to 2.25. why!?
IDK could have been for fuel milage. Volkswagen put a restrictor in the VW Fox exhaust, remove the restrictor, power went up,but fuel mileage went down.

No, it's because the rider doesn't want to listen to them. They just want everybody else to listen to them.
Oh this is funny, loud pipes didn't save my life, but they saved my a$$ one night. I had just drag raced some guys Kaw against my Yamaha,we were sitting a parking lot when a cop rolled in. (We've had a complaint, you were street racing) . No sir I saw it,it wasn't us it was a Kaw 900 against a Harley, just then a few blocks away you hear a loud Harley take off hard. The cop jumped in his car and took off in the direction of the noise. The good guys won,I guess maybe not,I was in the wrong.

Loud pipes can make for headaches too, still fun though. Ideally they really don't bark until you're winding it out, but growl at more normal RPM.
