1985 C10 Door Mirrors

My daughter was driving the 85 C10 today and collided with a 2008 Silverado and knocked the glass out of the 85 mirror and demolished the 08 mirror.

The mirror on the 85 is the factory mirror is chrome metal. The only replacements I found so far are plastic. The housing has a dent, but I'm contemplating just putting the replacement glass in the housing, also I did find the mirrors on LMC and have a choice of flat or covex.

What type of glass was in the 85's, flat or convex?

I think they were flat, I know I would want flat but I;m old school . Also oldtime hardware stores use to cut mirror glass. doubt if any do nowadays

If you get a new assembly, DO NOT get a chrome one. Most definitely get the stainless steel version (like original). The chrome one will be brown in a year or two.

I got the rest of the glass out. i replaced the mirror in Mr. Cook's truck this morning.

I decided to put a replacement glass in the 85 until I can find a GOOD set of mirrors, that way it can be driven until then.

Will a basic silicone glue work to hold the new mirror in? I removed a silicon, I guess, from the old mirror that was holding it on.

I'd use urethane windshield adhesive. If you don't want to go that far with longevity, that E6000 stuff in a squeeze tube would probably work very well also.

I had some E6000, but it had dried up. I ended up using some Permatex clear adhesive sealant.

As others have said, the factory mirror is Stainless Steel. It is NOT chrome. I don't have any experience with the chrome version, I would trust @bucket on that score. The driver's side mirror is a flat, conventional mirror. The passenger's side had the "Objects are closer than they appear" glass.

I don't think it should be too difficult to find a decent replacement for that mirror.

I did findf that the passenger mirror did have the objects in mirror phrase. I'm looking at stainless steel mirrors.

They make special adhesives for attaching to glass. If you're only using the generic clear permatex as a temporary fix you should be fine for a little while. But I have used the wrong adhesive in the past only to have the glass fall out after a couple months and shatter on the road while driving. Glass is very smooth, not a lot of stuff likes to stick to it. Hah, I spent far too much time looking at that bare white mounting surface before I figured it out. Damn I wish I remembered which specific product I used. I think it was either windshield adhesive like Bucket said, or maybe some of that glue that is used to hold rearview mirrors to the windshield. Might have even used both in different spots for good measure, lol I tried about everything before one of them did the job permanently.

I might have a really nice mirror with no glass in it, I can check at some point tomorrow if you want. I had a few sets of mirrors at one point, not sure what's left. I also have an older aftermarket one that looks very factory but it has some weird cheesy glass in it with a gasket around it, the housing itself is still stainless if I'm not mistaken. That's the one I would throw on every time the glass fell out of my regular mirror while I was playing the trial and error game

The glass was a bit smaller than the original, but will do for now.

Looks good ... I am restoring my 85 K5 and both sides were flat ... I have pulled a few mirrors off some 83 C10 and Suburban ... I think I have a non dented head that I could send you with original glass .. I am purchasing the o-rings from E-bay so I would get some of those as well ... I will look tonight .. FYI ... I'm the original owner and my passenger side never had the phrase on it.

Bumping the old thread as I want to replace the driver side flat and passenger side barely spherical mirror with 2x aspherical so that I can finally see cars that I'm cutting off when changing lanes :) The glass is held with an adhesive? What's the correct way of removing it without breaking? And is left and right glass shape identical, or slightly different?
