    Steering Gearbox Blues

Seems to be the way to go anymore. Seems like reman / rebuilt quality is tanking these days. Steering box is next on my list, but I'm done with rebuilds. Lost money dealing with rebuilt starters and other things. On the last rebuilt stock starter the primary power post threads stripped when I...

T-5 or T-56 Manual Trans swap

The M-21 and its sister model M-22 rock crusher was used in muscle cars, often paired with a 4.10 or 4.56 rear end. First gear in the M-21 is 2.20. I don't see it as doing much good in a pick up truck unless its a light weight C10 and you don't plan on doing much other than driving it around...

    Burnouts with a NP203 full time 4wd?

I've never had a 203. I thought 208 was the only chain driven. I guess I stand corrected.

    Burnouts with a NP203 full time 4wd?

I'm assuming you're talking about the T-case? The NP203 is not chain driven. It's gear driven. No chains in the exploded view diagram. The 14 bolt rear end is pretty much bullet proof, it's what's in the carrier that may or may not be bullet proof.

    Correct Tail Gate

The Cheyenne super was the fanciest, top of the line package for ‘73 and ‘74. While GM kept the Cheyenne package, Cheyenne super was eliminated in ‘75 and GM introduced Silverado first the first time, which replaced it as top of the line. That’s why a ‘73 and ‘74 top of the line trim, including...

    Correct Tail Gate

No. I believe it’s part of the Cheyenne super equipment package, which is RPO code YE9.

    Correct Tail Gate

I have a '73 C20 Cheyenne super. This is the original tailgate and trim.

Ported or manifold vacuum for vacuum advance

You can always keep the old one in a box tucked away in your K5 for emergencies. I saved my old dizzy for that reason. I live in Wyoming and there are a lot of places in the middle of no where to get stranded. It's always good to be prepared.

What big block starter do you use?

I bought a cheap rebuilt one from Oriellys and the threads on the primary power post stripped when I tightened the nut. Fed up, I bought a brand new one from Summit. So far it’s working great. It’s lighter weight and the posts for the primary power and the switch wire are in easier to get to...

Ported or manifold vacuum for vacuum advance

I saw that video a while ago and I agree with Uncle Tony using ported for the reason that if you run manifold you loosing advance the moment you put your foot on the gas and start to get into it. Ultimately I think it's your truck and you should run it whichever way you prefer. There are...

    85 GMC C20 rear diff

Posi is a broad term that just means positive traction, where both wheels are powered and turning in the same direction. There are lots of types of units, including limited slip, that fall under the umbrella of Posi. The original Posi was a clutch pack style limited slip that is still made by...

    Heater core

Factory service manual says the heater hose line should run from the water pump to the heater core. This should be the 5/8" hose (the smaller hose) because this is the pressure side pumping hot coolant to the core. The larger hose, which is the 3/4" return line, can run from the heater core to...

    Warn hydraulic winch?

Kinda late to the conversation, but maybe this will be helpful. I'm putting a winch on my square soon and I've been leaning towards hydraulic. My uncle has a '75 K20 and he put a hydraulic winch on it decades ago, still has it and uses it. Not sure the brand, he said a co-worker gave it to him...

    About differentials

Being an ‘84 with California emissions it was a pile of crap. Fuel economy was terrible. If it was desmogged it would’ve ran great.

    About differentials

    I had an '84 K5 with 2.73 gears and a 700R4. Gutless. A 6.2L diesel could out run it.

    G80 vs G86

I talked to my uncle, who is a seasoned retired mechanic, about this issue and he says he's seen so many G80s grenade. He thinks they're junk. Sure, some have lasted a long time, but he's seen too many blow up to have a positive opinion of the G80.

    Oil leak

I’m having a similar issue on my 454 in my ‘80 K25. You need to clean off the oil. You can use Dawn. It works great. Sling a bunch of soap ropes all over the area and agitate and wash it off with a garden hose and a spray nozzle. Let it dry. While parked, run the truck at a fast idle. Like at...

    Ignition question

@Matt69olds is correct. The circuit is not fused. It’s on a switched circuit that is supplied with power only when the key is on. From the block on the firewall it should be a heavier gauge pink wire to the BAT terminal on the distributor cap. Depending how many hillbillies have had their hands...

Do I need a block heater?

If your engine is in good shape and you have everything tuned up you shouldn't need the help of a block heater. Yes it will be an easier start, but it will start without one. Even with a timer they will still run up the electric bill. I live in Wyoming and my square does fine in the cold without...

    Choke light on automatic transmission?

Light bulb could've come loose or have bad contacts. The BRAKE light in my '73 C20 is supposed to light up at start up to let you know the light works. Sometimes it doesn't light up. Many years ago I found the bulb was burned out. Put a fresh one in thats still good, but I think its a little...

    Choke light on automatic transmission?

I believe my '80 came from the factory with a hot air choke and it has the yellow lens for the choke light in the speedo, but it wasn't used. It's a base model GMC Sierra and had all idiot lights and no small gauges. On the speedo, half of the yellow lens was Four Wheel Drive and the other half...

    Choke adjustments

Good article. Thanks for sharing. Living in Wyoming where it can get to triple digits in the summer and -25°F in the winter I have to adjust my choke twice a year: once in the fall and once in the spring. Using the credit card method, that is to vertically place a credit card in the carb and...
