Pass Ca. Smog with new Top End?

It isn't so much the replacement equipment you put on the engine that makes you fail the sniffer test, it is the fact that anal politicians don't want people changing things. a well tuned hot rod will run much cleaner than most of the older stock cars on the road - they allow for a lot dirtier...

    Cali Smog Engine Rebuild

A clean running engine(new build) will far surpass what the state allows on older engines. Where people get in trouble is when they flap their gums there, or even tell the inspector that it is a fresh build. Make sure to leave all the original parts on the outside of the engine, have a GM intake...

    1979 Trans Am - 25 years in a garage

Anyone who knows about GM cars will tell you that Olds was king. They were usually the first division to try something new. Rocket 88 anyone? multiple carburetors? Supercharger? Can you say badass? http://gatewayautomuseum.com/cars-galleries/f-88-gallery/

Three on tree and steering refurbish

For what it is worth, the "hole" you would need to cut in the floor is only a slot about 1" wide by maybe 3 1/2". It has been many years since I have put in a shifter, but the cutout needed in the floor is minimal.

Dash brake light keeps coming on

You could have a bad spring on one side and have a shoe dragging, or even tightening up the e brake was enough to break something in there. If it has been sitting for years, rust can do many bad things. Save your pennies and consider all the brake hardware along with the rear brake job.

Thin Head Gasket and Comprtession Ratio

I would consider using another cam. You engine will never perform the way the cam was designed and you won't be happy. There are a few performance cams with more low end that will really do the job. Always match your parts as they are designed - having a good squish is important, but not as much...

    91 suburban big block

I have a bad head gasket, I think. The coolant seems to be disappearing and it is not leaking outside the engine. I only have 140k on the vehicle. If I have to get someone to do the work(I am handicapped) and the heads come off, I want to check them out, do a valve job at least. I am in Ca, so...

    Clicking noise

Do you have any jokers at work or in the neighborhood? Ball bearings, marbles, or even a couple of pebbles in your hub caps will drive you nuts.

    Tip for parts search

If you think that is bad, try to find parts for the last few years of IH trucks. Brake parts are a guess, they used what they could find. The same with late 70s Ford 4WD vehicles. They would make them for a couple of weeks, go back to 2wd and then some engineer would change something and the...

    Maaco?

Here in Ca, the Air Pollution Control District is hard on painters, body shops can only do spot work, unless they want to spend lots o' bucks on a spray booth. Most of the smaller shops will use Maaco or have a deal with a larger shop for painting. Painting requires a total prep, that is the...

    Planning summer small block build

400s run hot - are you sure that is what you want in Az? You can get plenty of power from a 350 SBC, why even look at 400s? I would look around and talk to the people in machine shops - if you have the space, be on the lookout for a donor wreck(with the right engine, pull it, have it done...

Side view mirrors when doors off

Mirrors on the outside of the vehicle were dealer installed items in their new car get ready department. Some states did not require outside mirrors and the cars were shipped that way. I remember my father getting a ticket on a car he bought new just before he junked it, for not having a side...

    looking for a Grumman van

Bread trucks are hot in the summer and cold in the winter. Insulating them is fine, but the doors rattle and the roll up door can never be quieted. If you want to build a motorhome, start with a large ambulance or school bus. Those have heating and A/C already, the ambulance has the electrical...

    Battery choice?

You can buy a solar battery tender that plugs into your cigarette lighter, just leave it on the dash. It should keep enough juice in a battery to be able to start the truck and if almost fully charged, it will slow charge to top it off. You can buy one on ebay for less than $20

    Started in on my 78'

Painting the truck to same base color and adding a second color is a great idea. That way your areas that are hard to paint without complete tear down don't stick out. Color patterns(like stock or even a side stripe) or white on a solid color really make to truck pop and it doesn't end up...

IN NEED OF A FUEL TANK SELECTOR VALVE SINGLE PIN 6 PORT

You could go old school and put in a manual valve and mount it through the floor just left of the driver's seat, like I did when I put saddle tanks in my '69. Switching the valve to the unused input is also just about as good as a kill switch for anti-theft purposes.

Too many? I have one or two other options

I would suggest you look into metal pole buildings. My city gave me a lot of grief when I wanted to build a second garage - it would have cost 40K for a 22x22. So I just poured a slab(that was not obvious from the street) And had one put up from a company. I had to go smaller, 14' wide, but 8...

    Seat belts

The same can be said if you end up in the canal or whatever body of water. I have been in a couple of high speed accidents in my life and seat belts will save you from injury. If you are knocked out with seat belts on, imagine how bad it would have been without seat belts.

    Well What A Day!

If you have to go this route, you may want to buy a"hair drier" that plugs into the cig lighter. These blow hot/warm air and can help with fogged windows in the winter and will usually warm up the interior of a VW bug, maybe not a suburban - well for sure not a suburban.
