Considering a Gen V Swap into my '77

Are you aware that they made SBCs with 4 bolt mains. They made a 350 and even a 400. If you are lucky, you can get a crank from a 400, put it in a 350 and you get a 383. WOW!

    Front end ticking..

I don't know where you live, but around here, AC is very important and well worth it. I would find a way, unless you have a field truck, then you could take the doors off for extra air flow.

Build 'em like they used too?

Thee was this old clerk at the auto parts store I work in in 74. He talked about buying a roll of packing material when he was in high school and he would rebuild ford flathead water pumps in pop's garage. He did generators and regulators also when he was in college. He would make enough to...

4L80E or GV Overdrive for my '90 Suburban?

Unless you are on the highway for more than a couple of hours each way, I would leave it be. It is really hard to beat a TH400. The weak point on a 4L60 is the OD and it is expensive to rebuild. You could always get taller tires next time.

    Suburban Project- Need Help!

Back a few decades, a fellow towed his Olds 442 to the drags in SLC. in a qualifying round, he had trouble with his engine. That night he pulled the engine from his tow vehicle(which happened to be an Olds engine, put in in the car, tuned it that morning and went to win top in his class. I raced...

    Suburban Project- Need Help!

If the engine runs right and the carb is adjusted, you should pass smog(in Ca) with a vehicle that old. Keep it stock(or maybe even an RV cam - don't tell them) and you are ok. Sometimes different distributers won't pass, so check that out first.

    Suburban Project- Need Help!

They do, but in Ca a different engine is a nightmare of smog. You would be surprised at how many engines can be brought back with a basic overhaul. Cast iron ring(unless the cylinders are scored and no cross hatching), have the crank checked. A cheap valve job(at the jr college?), and just put...

20% + increase in fuel mileage!

Another factor is the traffic factor. Was there more traffic before the Covid crisis? Being able to cruise at speed without the stop and go(or slowing down and up to speed), does make a difference in fuel mileage.

Stick,Mig, Carbon Arc, Gas, and now Tig. Let's talk.

You guys are so spoiled with flux coated stick, in the old days, they dipped the stick in flux and went for it. That is how they made the victory ships in the Kaiser shipyards. With DC

Making my 1990 Suburban bullet proof. What do I need to do?

I am installing an inverter in my 91. I had one that I just clipped to the battery, but someone stole it when they broke in. New cars come with these, you have a couple of cigarette lighter connections, some usb ports and 110v ac plugin(s). If you have a second battery, you don't even have to...

Does rollerizing a 454 really make a difference.? Not for racing, just a street brute.

Make sure that you have the right cam for the build. A cam for a higher compression motor will fall flat without enough compression.

    My new acquisition

That cab is real handy, with or without the jump seat. A great place to put items(tools, groceries, whatever that you do not want stolen when you park it. I really hate 3 or 4 door trucks.

Swapping the SM465 for a Car style 4 speed

Remember that the shifter handle you use with be very low, since they are made for cars, not trucks. If you have short arms, you will have to extend the length of the shifter arm. It won't be easy to shift and if extended, it won't be a short shift(unless you modify the tabs on the trans, which...

The new mexicans are in town

Imagine a country having a revolution, creating a new government and then wanting to complain that they should still have the land the old government sold. You can't have it both ways, amigo.

Am I Cursed by the Carburetor Gods? Or do I just suck with Carburetors?

Is this the six with the incorporated intake manifold? The fix is to use an older head and manifolds, those heads crack and do suck air. They can do it intermittently and drive you crazy. The fact that you have a burned exhaust valve could show a bad vacuum leak, you are running too hot. I think...

    Title problems, vin swap?

Sometimes you have to trust people. If the old couple have "kids", they should be old by now and should just sign it over to you. If they don't, it is a lesson to you. Other than that, you dummy up some type if bill of sale. Really, how much would it truly set you back? It sucks, but it isn't...

    In case you wondered...

The main part of torquing bolts is that the bolts are all torqued the same. Using the same torque wrench will make for an even torque. I feel that is more important to be even than to be to book spec. Unless your wrench is more than 10% off.
