    New guy here...77 c20 292 NEED HELP

Hi and welcome !! After checking for vacuum leaks if you don't find it there be sure to check the lobe lift of those 2 cylinders. I wore-out a cam & lifters on my '78 C20 350ci @ 147,000 miles. Please keep us posted , and GL !

Zinc, Engine oil and flat cams

I agree that diesel oils may provide minimal gains because of the very high detergent levels that may scrub the zddp away. I've been using Hyper Lube Zinc Replacement additive in my flat tappet engines, it will allow you to use any off the shelf oil and provide better protection than even zddp...

Zinc, Engine oil and flat cams

I do recognize his direction, misguided as it may be. To think that no one ever needs either is truly foolish, (zinc adds are not needed as often I'm sure), attempting to link the two together shows a lack of true understanding of either.

Difference between HD and non HD front suspension 82 C-20

RockAuto is showing upper control arms (loaded) for as low as $20.79. The only callout for an HD option looks like the lower arms only , uppers seem to be all alike.

    New engine break-in method

That may be how we always did it, but we can learn better ways too. I'll be using this new method on my new 407, and if I ever build it my 496. I'll volunteer to lose some hot oil during those 10 min cool-down periods too, (big magnets and cleaner -metal free- oil), drive it around semi-easy...

    About differentials

All half ton fronts suck and I don't know of any improvement yr to yr, the 3/4 & one ton fronts do not bolt into a half-ton unfortunately. Wish they did, I'm going to install a hot 407 into my '94 shortbed

    97 454 L29 Vortec into a 80 K25

Thanks, I did find post #8 but could enlarge it to see the durations or lobe seperation. I'm sure the advance will be a great boost off-idle TQ. I do have an L29 core sitting for several yrs now but have decided to use an older block to have a mech fuel pump, and with vortec heads to build an...

    About differentials

All good advice. My friends '87 V10 had the 4.3 6 cyl and the 4 speed manual OD trans with 33" tires, it was a disaster in OD unless you were over 70/75 mph - but it wouldn't maintain that speed and you'd be forced to downshift. Meaning - be careful with your gearing, if you have a stock half...

For your absorption and contemplation I bring you a rumination of the reverie of burnt cats on toast

I have Hedmans on my '94 K1500 and their collector style works very well, and at 62 yrs old I've had alot of headers and I now always want this style.

    Black stone oil analysis

That is a concern, but may not be solely the only problem unfortunately. 15 years is a long time ago and if it started immediately it wouldn't have lasted this long. It won't last alot longer if you keep driving it tho' ! Antifreeze is like fine dirt in the bearings, and you can bet they're...

For your absorption and contemplation I bring you a rumination of the reverie of burnt cats on toast

I use the Summit universal H-pipe kits, they're aluminized and I buy their AL'zd straight pipes and mandrel bends. Then wire brush the welds and use AL paint . Holds up well -even in salty Indiana ! Need to rebuild all of it on my K30, soon, starting with new headers. Most of it will be 3" - if...

    Limited Slip Carrier Question

8.5's would all be the same (except either 28 or 30 spline axles), 8-7/8" is the diameter of a 12 bolt ring gear. There are 8.6" carriers but they are out of later models, (approx late '90's and up),they only fit if you change other parts such as bearings and axles (?). More info is out there to...

In search of shorty headers for my suburban

To get the real gains - why not use proper long-tube headers ? I consider the effort required to un-bolt iron manifolds worth more than bolting on shortys !

    what cam to use??

Are the bad lifters always in the same position, or same bank ? What did the rest of your lifters look like after the first go around ? One of the Valvoline VR oils is a street oil only,(so low in Z,M,P) but I assume you've done the research already. I'd use a different break-in procedure for...

Does rollerizing a 454 really make a difference.? Not for racing, just a street brute.

I believe it would be well worth it. BBC's are particularly hard on flat tappets also, and with the reduced friction comes the ability to use any off the shelf oil and more TQ & HP. Ask Chris Straub his opinion. I'd be interested to hear his thoughts also, his word is highly respected - as it...

    Vortec heads vs 350 exhaust.

I'd make sure to use a dual exhaust with headers and H-pipe crossover too, you'll get your money back with increased gas mileage. Works even with a TBI or regular 2bbl.

    350 build advice.Heads,Cam .Etc.

Your original plan is just right. Along with the cam & head choices. Maybe deck the block is all that you could add-on to perfect the quench, but I wouldn't run the EGR. $.02

    Converting 89 r1500 into a 1 ton 2wd

Well, no not a booster, just larger brakes overall like you'd have on a ton or hvy 3/4 ton. You've answered my question that you will address this upgrade also, since this likely is the most important aspect of hauling and towing.
