    Losing Aftermarket Lights Periodically

Did you try to figure out if the ground is good? The dim LED in the floor light switch would seem to indicate its getting power but not enough to function properly. If you can verify 12V at the power side the only other thing left is ground on that one if it doesn't have a controller.

    Points vs HEI vs WHAT?

Here is a quick explanation. Points are an actual physical electrical switch inside the distributor. There is a cam on the distributor shaft that pushes open the switch (points) for every time the spark plug needs to fire. The points have to be adjusted to open at the proper time and open the...

    neutral safety switch

Too me it would be worth the effort to install a NSS. You may always remember to be careful starting the truck but it only takes one time of someone else starting it in gear or you forgetting once and all of a sudden you have major front or rear end damage.

You can go to the GM Heritage website and see if the information packet for your year truck lists original tire sizes.

    Engine break in

I was just reading through and was going to suggest that since it is a crate motor it was already primed. I don't know about your engine but I've done engineering sign off on re manufacturing of newer overhead cam engines and they were primed and had a motored test at the end of assembly to...

    Engine break in

There really is no break in for a new car engines at the factory anymore. The engine has been rotated a half dozen times during assembly. Then almost all engines now only go through a cold test where the engine is hooked up electrically to a computer and then driven by an electric motor for...

    What's the other relay?

My truck has several but it's older with a carb and heavy duty. There is a relay for the AIR pumps on the firewall, there is a relay for the electric fans on the drivers side inner fender.

    Taillights not working!

Is it the stalk or the actual switch inside? Have you worked on a column before? 89Surburban did a good thread with visual instructions. You need a steering wheel puller and a lock plate tool.

    Taillights not working!

Yes, the power for the brake lights goes through the turn signal switch. My turn signal switch was broken and prevented the LH rear brake light from working. The brake and turn signal light uses the same filament of the rear bulb. If the brake light is not on, then the turn signal switch...

    83 K10 Cold Idle issues

Good info as usual Jerry! To be honest whenever I see a cold start thread I look at the age of the poster and start to think of explaining proper cold start procedure for a carbureted engine. Not to offend any younger people but if they've never driven a carb'd vehicle before they don't know...

    Rattling sound while accelerating?

Would the auto shop teacher take on your engine as a project for the class? I glanced at the book on Amazon, looks like a good basic book about rebuilding an engine. There is a picture of a Square on the back cover. I haven't seen the whole book but I'm guessing it should cover your engine...

What is this? And should I get a new one? + General noob questions...

There should be a decal on the air cleaner showing all the vacuum line routing. If yours is missing there is a thread on here with images of lots of them. Find your year and engine to help figure it all out. http://www.gmsquarebody.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3520

Exhaust cutouts using electronic throttle body?

There are plastic gears and a printed circuit board inside an ETB, I'm not sure how long it will last with exhaust temperatures. It could be worth a try if you can get it cheap or free. Also, they are designed to not fully close, for idle air. Not sure if it would ever seal completely but it...

    Rattling sound while accelerating?

It will most likely be crank main bearings or connecting rod bearings. I agree that you should try to pull engine and see everything it needs. I bought my truck knowing it had a very bad lower end knock. We only ran it for less than a minute before shutting it off. It turned out one of my...

What have you done to your square lately??

Yes those are the factory radio connectors. I bought an adaptor to wire in a new head unit that plugs into them so I didn't have to hack up the factory wiring.
