‘87 454 TBI, NO Fuel spray, HAS fuel pressure, has 12v @ injectors, has spark

Usually when the ICM module goes bad you lose both spark and injector pulse - if it runs off of starting fluid/bit of gas dribbled into the TB then you can rule out the pickup in the distributor and probably the ICM as the problem. The way the injectors work is they have +12 on them...

    Brake light keeps going out

A bad ground can be confusing - what will sometimes happen (my friend Dave's 1987 Chevy did this one) will be if the ground is bad, current will partically flow back through the other filiment and make it seem like its working - you press the brake and it comes on, turn on the lights and it...

    Parasitic draw

I like that shunt - where did you get it? I have used an antique DC ammeter to hunt down phantom draws in British cars (it is a relic from my grandfather which he used back when houses were fed with DC current - measures up to 300 amps) - that shunt and a modern digital meter would be a lot...

1987 454 TBI down on power, runs good otherwise

From what I can tell on mine the injectors aren't a low-high configuration. both spray more with increasing throttle when you observe them - but that question does bring up a possibility. If only ONE of them is working (or one working well one marginal), that could explain the low-throttle...

1987 Suburban BUCKET seats inner 3-pt buckle floor mount location?

Mine keep flopping down between the seat and console as well - hadn't considered the absolute perfection of the zip-tie for that particular application but its now on my to-do list next time I have the cover off the big beast.

86 Suburban 2nd row shouldber belts

Not sure about aftermarket sets but if you can find an 87-90 vehicle in a boneyard grabbing them shouldn't be too hard (as long as your truck already has the hardpoints to mount them up on). Or fine someone turning an 87-90 Suburban into a ranch/hunting rig with the rear seats removed and see...

    Oil Leak Into Cab

I had a 1992 Escort (essentially a rebadged Mazda) that had the speedo cable wicking oil into the panel and down onto my leg problem once. Never seen anything like that before. And of course anything British just leaks oil as a matter of principle. My current 1970 British project drips oil on...

Disconnected mystery wire in 1982 C10

I usually try to do it that way (unless its a "side of the road get it home" repair) - if the seals on one side are worn to the point of leaking, pretty good odds the other side is pretty close to wearing out as well.

    Stumped on oil leak

My friend Dave had this happen on his SBC truck - it was substantial blow-by pressurizing the lower crankcase - on his truck you'd rev it and the dipstick would pop about halfway out. It also contributed to a lot of other oil leaks because the front and rear main seals are not designed to...

    Power only comes on intermittently

I havn't been advocating (or even intending to advocate) for replacing the fusible links with anything else. Removing them is something I expect the previous owners of my truck would have done based on other things I've found, so I wanted to clarify not only their purpose but also the use case...

    Carb at high alt

My 454 with the factory style fan clutch and shroud runs down the highway all day long staying nice and cool, only time I start seeing the temp needle creep up is in traffic. It used to get REALLY hot until I realized someone had put the incorrect fan on (it was a factory correct fan but for an...

    Power only comes on intermittently

OK that actually is an explaination that I can comprehend the concept of. With all the other electrical gremlins I've encountered in my truck, I would not be surprised to find some of the links bypassed or removed. Do any of the manuals have a comprehensive list of which circuits have fusible...

    Power only comes on intermittently

I don't know - but I would love to understand the reasoning about why just using an inline fuse won't work (seems like the concept is the same, too much current and it pops protecting from fire).

What’s the solution to this?? Idle adjustor

I downloaded and read the manual for that Innova3170 which Autozone offers, and according to its instructions it only retrieves the codes on GM vehicles, it doesn't seem to have live monitoring capability so that might not be overly useful since the codes are easily available through the SES...

part ID & smog pump removal

At this point my main curiousity is involving the 454 TBI adaptor. If there really is a standard Q-jet intake under there, and you remove the adaptor - what are coolant lines for and how do you reroute them? Not cutting/modifying the fuel lines or wiring is certainly a plus, in case returning...

What’s the solution to this?? Idle adjustor

Will that Innova one from Autozone read the live data from OBD-1 or just the error codes? The RedRiver bluetooth option looks really nice but since its listed as an "LLC" I'm expecting it to be an overseas purchase so that might not work. I've seen the various units at Autozone but always...

What’s the solution to this?? Idle adjustor

Is there any current source to get one of these? Has some sort of copyright/intellectual property dispute made then illegal? The only references I can find are to people or companies that seem to have vanished a decade or more earlier. A tool like that seems vital to really solving issues...

part ID & smog pump removal

I'll be checking on that - if I do have that setup I'll be much closer switching to a carb than I expected to be.

What’s the solution to this?? Idle adjustor

How you FIND the IAC counts? Mine always wants to idle at about 950, it will start off with a nice low idle and then as you sit at a light it will slowly start to idle up to around 950 and never go back down until you turn off and on again. Someone before me had already removed the cap and...

    87 R20 suburban

Very accurate. The oil presssure fuel switch serves a a backup for the fuel pump relay, should keep you running even if the relay fails. The fact that you get no fuel to the TBI even after coaxing it to run long enough to build oil pressure says your problem lives elsewhere. Because it does...

part ID & smog pump removal

So a factory 1989 454 with TBI should actually have essentially a Q-jet intake with an adaptor plate? That could make my life a lot easier if it comes down to doing a TBI to Q-jet conversion. And that part circled in red is absolutely the vaccum actuator for cruise control. If you REALLY...

    Just advice please

I'd consider throwing a compression check at it while you have the plugs out. If you're getting low compression or a lot of leakdown on one or more cylinders, that may be an indication of time for a ring job (which would also explain the blow-by).

87 V10 Custom Deluxe TBI Issues

Can you provide a little more detail about replacing the smog pump and pipes with a 25K resistor? I'm not familiar with this but it could become relevant to me later (my truck still has all the AIR injection but it could be contributory to my lean fuel error so that might need to change).

Woo hoo! I'm trying to reassemble an MGB - that stuff could be a lifesaver! And its genuine Lucas so you know its been approved by the Prince of Darkness.

    Factory smoke

Whenever I disconnect/reconnect a battery I always hook up one side then give the other one a very quick tap on the terminal without actually putting it around (for a top post) or screwing it in (for a side post). That way if I see any kind of arc I know something is wrong and its only had a...
