ALDL connector not powering scan tool

i just wanted to clarify for the original poster. I figured you knew but since he stated he has an ‘87 truck, that means tbi and not ccc. carry on Ben

ALDL connector not powering scan tool

tbi trucks won’t run without ecm. The earlier ones with the feedback carb will but very poorly. Ben

ALDL connector not powering scan tool

Ok, the coolant temp sensor in the intake by thermostat is the coolant temp sensor for the ecm. It’s got two wires. The single wire temp sensor in the drivers side head is for the gauge. You need a scan tool to see what the ecm is seeing for coolant temp. But since you can’t connect, I’d just...

Stumble at low rpm in gear.

That would be water in your fuel. You can buy a ton of filters and just run it through or drop the tank and drain it out. Anything in your fuel other than fuel will make it run like crap. ben

    Alternator belt slip

Every square I’ve had has had bad alternator squeal. All were fixed by replacing alternator AND the pulley. A fresh pulley fits the belt better and quiets squeal. Also, I’ve noticed that when the alternators get old and tired, they stop putting out hardly anything for amps at idle. Then once...

89-91 Suburban overhead console. Worth it?

Ok suburban guys. I’ve got the headliner out of my 87 to redo it. I kind of want to get an overhead console and have found one with the bracket. You guys like the console? Use it much? Worth the cost and effort? thanks ben

What have you done to your square lately??

Finally pulled the middle intake bolts to clean and put thread sealer on them so I don’t have pools of oil sitting on the intake. Simple job that I’ve just put off for literally 8 years lol. Now I don’t smell hot oil when I get out of the truck after running it.

Brown/black advance wire - unplugged - idles better and runs about same.

You need to shut the truck off after plugging the brown wire back together. Not sure why but every TBI truck I’ve got. I had to do that. this is the sequence I use for setting timing. Unplug brown wire, start truck, set timing, shut truck off, plug brown wire back in then start truck and run...

What have you done to your square lately??

ok, guess I’m confused and didn’t read the post right. Because the black GMC in this picture is what I was thinking they were talking about changing the grill to an 85 grill and I’m like, “it already has the correct grill”. Carry on. Ben

What have you done to your square lately??

can someone show me what an 85 GMC grill looks like? 85-87+88 k5’s and suburbans are all the same as far as I’ve seen. Ben

    700r4 lock-up

everything factory and working properly it already shifts from 3-4 with the converter locked with no problems. With a shift kit it’s a little harsh but no big deal. ben

    Roof insulation

I’ve got the headliner out in my suburban so I can redo it. Also I’m installing the rear wind deflector and roof rack. What’s the best insulation to use on the inside of the roof. I want to help out the a/c the best I can and keep the heat out. I know about dynamat but thought I read a post a...

    87 suburban 2wd axle shafts. 28 or 30 spline?

I’ve got axle seals just starting to leak and some play between bearing and axle shaft and I’ve been there and done that to know it’s going to need axle shafts. I’m having a hard time getting a definite part number and answer to which spline this truck has. I had always thought the the 88 and...

Think I need new springs? shocks? ROUGH RIDE

As an owner of several squares. If you’re comparing a c truck ( 2 wheel drive) to a K truck (4wheel drive) sounds about right. K trucks need kidney belts to be driven and C trucks are like floating on a cloud. Stock for stock that is. I would look into new shocks just because but if you want a...

    700r4 lock-up

Not having the converter unlock when under hard throttle would be a pain. My K-10 had 3.08:1 gears and would be a total dog if converter was permanently locked in 3rd and 4th. I wired mine up so I can lock it whenever I want, I can keep it unlocked whenever I want, or I can let mother GM control...

    89-91 suburban overhead console mount

I’m looking to add the factory overhead console to my 87 suburban while the headliner is out and I’m putting my stock roof rack on. I’ve found many consoles on eBay but no one pulls the bracket that mounts to the roof supports and the console mounts to. SO,... I’m looking for a gray console and...

What have you done to your square lately??

Finally put on the spoiler that I’ve wanted on all of my k5’s and this suburban but none had them. Next is the correct roof rack that I already have waiting. I pulled down the headliner so I can redo that. I’m replacing the expansion valve on rear a/c and replacing the blower motor and fans out...

    Electric choke question

You didn’t hook the power wire back up? Did you only take the carb off or did you do more? Stock the power wire is run through the oil pressure switch so it won’t send power to choke coil with motor not running. Did you disturb any of that. Start the truck and check for 12 volts going to choke...

What have you done to your square lately??

Finally put the original grill back in my truck. I’m a GMC guy over bow ties but, it’s been bugging me that I had an 85-87 GMC grill I’m my 82 Chevy. I even changed the stainless trim around the grill to the 83-87 style. So I swapped that back and put the stock grill back in too. I’ve come to...

Cam Break In - Tips for Avoiding Wiped Lobes?

Easiest thing for timing to do is that if you have a clear 0DTDC mark you can see and lines up with the mark on the dampener. Just buy an adjustable timing light. You can then dial in whatever degree you want of timing on the light and still line your 0 degree mark up and it’ll be where you want...

Cam Break In - Tips for Avoiding Wiped Lobes?

I’ve heard this too and have done a few flat tappet cams lately with no problem. Biggest thing to make sure of is that the lifters are free to spin in the bores when you install them. Whether it be machining issues, oil carbon built up in the bore, whatever, if the lifter can’t spin by hand...
