    700R4 TV Cable Issue

What did you do for the shifter? I have a 700-R4 in a 1982 with a tilt column that was supposed to have come from a Blazer with 700-R4 but no matter what I adjust with the linkage the shifter gate in the column will only align with one position. So I adjust it for Park to lock in and everything...

California Square Body fans - Proposal to extend smog exemption model years

Would be nice if California could be forced in this to respect federal law and regulations, which has a 25 year old or more exemption. Meanwhile, California persists in making it illegal to make old vehicles less polluting through improvements to their emissions equipment and engines. I've...

    Best Cordless Tools?

Find a used tool place or pawn shop that has Ryobi ONE+ tools, either the old blue and yellow or the new green and black style. Don't bother about whether or not the old NiCD batteries are good. Go to the nearest Home Despot and buy some new Lithium Ion batteries and charger. They're available...

Square Body Front Clip on a Medium

You'd have to keep a set of headlights down low due to headlight height regulations. Might even have to leave the higher up ones disconnected to satisfy some States.

    my whacked column rebuild

I've been trying to persuade some aftermarket parts company to make the 4 speed detent plates to retrofit the 3 speed straight and tilt columns for the late 70's and 80's. They make them for the older trucks that never had 4 speed autos. Dunno why they all refuse to make them for the newer...

    Homemade and modified tool thread

No picture handy but I made a long reach tool for changing those curly fluorescent light bulbs. Cut two pieces of cardboard about 3x4" Cut halfway across the middle from one of the 3" sides then slide together in an X. Notch one side to fit over the end of a piece of PVC pipe. Cut the other side...

    Homemade and modified tool thread

Left to right. Fancy bolt ground down to 3/8" square for turning sockets in really tight places, often with the socket cut short on a lathe. Has seen plenty of use since the initial job it was made for. Socket turned down to fit exhaust pipe bolts on a 1997 Taurus when I changed the oil pan...

    New engine break-in method

Also have to get the cam, crank, and rod bearings broken in. Dad's break in was to let the engine idle and watch the temperature. If it started heating up, shut it off. After a few times of that, drive the car but keep speed down for the first 500 miles and don't rev it up real high. Then change...

    Fuel pump pushrod stuck??...

I'd be wondering about the condition of the pump lobe on the camshaft.

    Resurfacing rotors, drums (esp OE)

Something I have done with brake pads that still had plenty of thickness but were worn crooked due to incorrect installation or had ridges from being used with grooved rotors is clamp them onto a milling machine and use a sharp but cheap end mill to cut the surface flat. Pinching pennies to go...

I could choke a GM engineer!

The C7 Corvette has a but of WTF under its hood. At the right rear there's a box with easy open latches. No idea what's in the box. But running along the side next to the engine, then across the back edge, is an insulated hard line that sure looks like it would have to be removed to get the...

    Steering Column Swap

Some RWD Mopar column parts for the 70's and 80's will interchange with GM since both companies bought their columns from the same manufacturer. The four mounting nuts welded onto the bottom of the tube are the same so GM and MoPar mounts fit each other's columns. Pretty certain made by TRW...

Purpose in second set of holes in frame from 89 2wd x member?

Different holes in the frame for different transmissions. 3 and 4 speed auto, manual, 4x4 or 2wd. The mounting pad on the tailshaft is where the rear transmission mount should go. That's THICK aluminum and the bolts holding the tail housing to the case are strong, and threaded plenty deep into...

    1982 3500 flatbed dually with EFI 350 and 700R4

I've put over $7,000 in this truck. Letting it go for $4,500. Lots of time and parts. Rebuilt 1991 350 with TBI, new injectors and fuel pressure regulator and spring, new custom engine wiring harness, aftermarket programmed ECU. Eagle cast steel crank, new flat top pistons, King crank and rod...

Swap body instead of engine, tranny, front and rear ends etc...

You want a tight fit, I know a guy who put a 1949 REO cab onto an early 2000's RAM 1 ton chassis with the big Cummins. Why? Because he wanted a massive rat rod. Custom built aluminum diamond plate bed and headache rack. Spent around $5K on custom wheels to put fat duals on the non-dually rear...

Loud Bang, something broke, then bad vibration in park or driving

DIY dual fan controller that switches two 12v fans between series and parallel, with adjustable ON temps to turn on in series and switching to parallel. Also has an AC clutch input to come on in series mode with the AC no matter the coolant temp. The IC with half the pins shorted together is...

No one has a practical use for dually split rims anymore, right?

Before being drafted into the US Army (circa 1960), dad worked at a tire shop. There were a few circle marks in the ceiling from split rings. They had a special spot for airing those up, with a cage to flip down over them. Anyone caught inflating a split ring off a truck without using the cage...

    Upgrading 1987 R10 A/C to R134a parts / questions

When converting from R12 to R134a you should use an oil with additives to make it compatible with any remnants of the old mineral oil left behind even after a really good flushing, and draining of the old oil from the compressor. One of those is Airsource 8201. R134a retrofit kits that include...

Could two power steering pumps be mounted to driver side?

A google for power steering pump for hydraulic plow pump turns up some interesting results. Looks like it can be done, with the right valves and other equipment. If you have a metal lathe or have access to one it should be possible to adapt an air conditioner magnetic clutch to the pump so it's...

    Gauge Cluster Swap

I upgraded an 82 from the speedo and large fuel + idiot lights to one that's speedo and large fuel + battery, temp, and oil gauges. Got the wiring diagrams and had to move a bunch of pins around. The other ends of the wires formerly going to the idiot lights got connected to gauge sensors. GM...

    Sticky Clam issue.

Dual fan controller circuit cribbed from a 1980's Pugeot. At low temp it runs the fans in series so they're each getting 6 volts and run at half speed. At high temp it switches the fans to parallel so they each get 12 volts to run at full speed. It also connects to the AC clutch wire to put the...

Got to a project I was putting off... Swapping to a tilt column

I put a tilt column in my 82. Now if some company would just get with it and make reproductions of the shifter parts to go with the 700-R4. The column was supposed to be from a truck that had a 4 speed but nope, from a 3 speed.

Any tips on cleaning the aluminum trim pieces

Scrub lengthwise with the original brushed finish. Going around in circles with steel wool will make it look worse. Could try experimenting on some aluminum scrap with various grits of sandpaper to come up with a look close to the original finish.

Is.... this a cylinder... sleeve? Do guys run them?

If they are for the Farmall, quick-ish way to get it running again with new sleeves, pistons and rings. Practically a new engine.
