    I'm dialing in my truck (stock 454, no egr/emissions, quadrajet #17080812, ~36 degrees total timing w/ vac advance). mixture screws are about 2-1/2 turns from bottom and APT screw is about 3 turns from bottom.     I think timing was off. Ended up replacing the balancer and got an afr gauge installed to verify how lean/rich I'm running. it seems to mostly have gone away. I still need to mess with the timing a bit but i think those two things solved my problem

    Gotcha. 1985, no smog pumps or egr. Should be no carbon buildup as I just did heads and cleaned ports/valves before reassembly. Maybe I have it too lean (8* before TDC and only 2 turns out on idle mixture screws) so I might try advancing the timing & re-connecting/re-setting the anti-dieseling...
