Anyone use the Yukon diff covers?

Still waiting on the bearing kit for my front 44 diff. My diff cover is looking pretty sad and I was considering getting these for the front 44 and my rear 14 bolt. Just curious if anyone uses them and has an opinion. If I get these covers I'll probably take the Yukon nameplates off.

Regearing Advice... What do I need?

How long until you do the 4L80? Do you have to modify the transmission tunnel on our cabs? Someday if (or more likely when) my 700r4 craps the bed I'll probably go that route.

    79 K15 - Universal steering column

I can't vouch for the column in your link, but I'd be nervous about using it. But I could be wrong and maybe it's a great column, just seems really cheap. What is it about your column that you don't think can be fixed? Almost all of these columns will need to be taken apart because the bolts in...

    79 K15 - Universal steering column

Fields Auto Salvage in Cedar Creek has a used one out of an 83 for $200. Their number is 512-247-4100.

Regearing Advice... What do I need?

I'm trying to figure out what this actually means. It's beneficial if you have 31" tires and 3.42 gears to know that going to 4.11 will bump your RPM 400, but I don't understand the mileage/performance rating. I guess according to that chart, the idea is to get close to 2,400 RPM on the highway?

    Dana 44 front axle issues

Never answered your question haha... I almost went with an air locker but didn't want to deal with the compressor and plumbing air lines. I love the Detroit locker in my 14 bolt. It took getting used to but after driving the truck with it, it's normal to me now. It did take some getting used to...

    Dana 44 front axle issues

I don't have a 60, mine is a Dana 44. When I built this truck about 4 years ago I actually had an opportunity to get a 60 pretty cheap, but I stuck with the 44 because up to this point I never broke a 44 and figured a 60 was an unnecessary fad unless you're rock crawling or making over 500 HP...

    Dana 44 front axle issues

Yeesh, just saw that a chunk took a bite out of the pinion gear too, add another $400 to the cost :flame: Lesson learned... When the diff starts crunching, don't drive it around trying to figure out why :Stupid Me:

    Dana 44 front axle issues

Definitely will. I'll probably post a million questions along the way, I've never rebuilt the actual differential so this will be a first for me. I used to take my axles to a local place by me but the guy retired and closed the doors. I need to figure this out because guys that do this are...

    Dana 44 front axle issues

(Edited) I called Eaton and they said this is the TT I need. They also said my carrier bearings should be the same, they should work with this TrueTrac?? Curious if you needed bigger bearings and I don't because yours was a 10 bolt and mine is a Dana 44...

    Dana 44 front axle issues

U-joints are good, I checked them. I think it's a classic case of $hit happens. I'm leaning towards getting a TrueTrac, this will replace my carrier and give me better traction. Might as well take advantage of my crappy luck in this scenario.

    Dana 44 front axle issues

I was surprised. Is it possible the front driveshaft is a smidge too short, and maybe that's what did this? It just seems too coincidental that it happened when I turned on that hill. I have a 4" lift and put a new driveshaft in it last fall, the driveshaft bolted in just fine but I don't...

    Dana 44 front axle issues

Because I have new hubs, rotors, lockouts, and crossover steering for this axle I think I'll try to nuke-proof either this Dana 44, or get a used 10 bolt and build that (all those parts will work on a 10 bolt). I'll report back but if anyone has suggestions on how to go about this I'm all ears.

    Dana 44 front axle issues

Well I'd say it's a worse case scenario for the ole Dana 44

    Dana 44 front axle issues

I was thinking possibly a u-joint too. I checked them and they aren't loose, but maybe one is froze. The clunking with hubs locked while it's in 2wd def points to a u-joint. It wasn't full clock when I steered and this all started, maybe half. I know better than to jam it full clock.

Regearing Advice... What do I need?

If you don't have overdrive and do a lot of towing you might hate 4.10 gears on the highway. I had a TH400 trans with 4.10 gears and at about 80 it was screaming, IIRC I was over 3,500 RPMs. That was with 33" tires, if yours are smaller it'll be worse. I swapped my TH400 to a 700r4 and...

    Dana 44 front axle issues

Long story, but I built this truck out of a few trucks I had. I kept the 3/4 ton axles, the rear is a 14 bolt which has been great, the front began life as the older, "big hub" Dana 44 from like 1975 When I started playing with this POS axle I didn't know anything about big hub Dana 44 axles...

    Wiper differences

That makes sense, I didn't know if they added delay to the dash switch or if they didn't add delay until they put the switch on the column. I had a 79 years ago but don't remember how its wipers worked.

Odd electrical runs from starter to alternator to junction block

Aside from this one issue, this was actually a very original gem that came from Oregon originally. Everything including the radio was original. That's what led me to post, because the rest of the truck was so original that I assumed this must have been how GM did it. If I had to guess, the wire...

    Wiper differences

I think it's odd that they split the differences between 77 and 78, because I think they didn't move the switch from the dash to the column until 1983 ish. Possibly this link might shed some light on this for you. I would also research which system worked the best and why it worked the best...

Odd electrical runs from starter to alternator to junction block

Mine was hacked and that was the whole point of why I posted. I was trying to figure out how it was supposed to be originally, so I could look at it and see what should be fixed and/or upgraded. My apologies if my original post didn't get that across.

Odd electrical runs from starter to alternator to junction block

I found my answer... The 6 cylinder in 1986 did not have that extra charge wire, but the v8 did have that extra charge wire. Here are the 2 different schematics. I was looking at the 6 cylinder schematic. 81-87 v8 engine schematic 81-87 l6 engine schematic Things I'll never know... Why someone...

Odd electrical runs from starter to alternator to junction block

I'm confident my truck is good now, but going to ask this one more time because I'm curious... The wire with the arrow pointing to it was missing on my truck. But the other schematic doesn't show that charge wire going to the battery at all. This was why it was confusing. Which of these is...

Odd electrical runs from starter to alternator to junction block

I must have either missed this post, or didn't read it fully earlier. The schematic you linked is how mine was wired, except if you look at the pic, the 10 gauge wire my arrow points to was gone on my truck. That schematic shows that additional 10 gauge wire going from the alternator charge stud...

Odd electrical runs from starter to alternator to junction block

Thanks. I have it wired correctly, just had my terminology wrong. But I appreciate the clarification for anyone that lands here searching for answers. Also thank you for clarifying how to read the wire gauge in the schematic, that's hugely beneficial!! (I edited my earlier response to fix my...
