For a budget build, especially a 4x4, I'd probably stick with a warmed over small block. Having a modern engine in front of a not modern trans (SM465, TH350/400) negates much of the advantages of doing an LS swap. If you want to also use a modern trans (NV3500/4500, 4L60/80, etc), then you have more cost as far as Tcase adapters, new driveshafts, clutch adaptation, etc. It snowballs quick. Ask me how I know :lol:
