went to walgreens for a battery for my digital caliper so I could measure the od of the valve stems to buy the correct seals, both of my digital calipers were acting up so threw them away, run to autozone, convince the kid working there that there is such a digital device that I'm describing, found one on the shelf, got home, measured the stems, ordered the seals.

My stepdad keeps trying to insist I stick a 350 that he has in the truck, says its a fresh rebuild. What would yall do? I kinda like my little 283/305 and it already has my cam in it, I guess I could pull the cam out and stick it in the 350...

16 year old me would have said "350 is bigger, I want that!". But modern day me would say "I've got this nice little 283 that I've put work into, I'll stick with the nice little 283".

yes....I hope I can get it back together once I get the needle bearings I need
Right on. Did you get the entire rebuild kit, or just part by part? I'd have to look, but there is a place in Washington state that sells rebuild kits for the 3 speeds and 4 speeds, and they come with all the seals, synchros, bearings, bushings, etc.

I'd stick with the 283, it'll run just fine.

Hmm. A free larger engine? Hard to say no

I bought a full kit but I'm not going to use it, just the seals and gaskets and bearings I need. For the life of me I cant figure out why the shafts wont go back together, If i have the needle bearings in them like they came out, it stops a quarter inch short. If I take the needle bearings out, the tailshaft goes in fine. Its the weirdest thing

Got the seals in, stopped and bought a valve spring compression tool (I think I’ll take it back and make one out of an old wrench) and then I discovered a bent pushrod. So I’ll need to buy a set of those

Also, realized I put the intake on too soon, need to take it off so I’m sure all the PRs are in the lifters correctly until I get the springs back in

Figured out the trans needle bearings, and got it all back together. I hope it works right.

My freeze plug for that hole in the back of the block by the distributor is too small so I’ll have to special order another size or three.

Paid $140 to rent a 54 piece installer remover set and it doesn’t have an adapter near the size for my crank. Going to take it back and go to Harbor freight. New dampener is in though and ready to install

Did get the little timing tab in the mail.

Slow going over here

Trans

The two light colored spaces where my fingers are pointing is where the needle bearings sit on the female section of the other shaft. I was trying to put a set of needle bearings on that middle dark piece and it wasn’t going. Once I finally looked at the shaft and realized where the riding surface was. I figured it out and got it back together.

@1low4x4 do you still have the tube that was in that hole in the back of the block? If you do, reinstall it, and cap it???

Wasn’t on the engine.

I was able to find the part number that supposedly fits, 555-024

It had a rubber expansion plug in it that was leaking profusely
