Shift linkage problems

Just got my first square at the end of January with the help from my grandfather, needs work to be road legal as its rusty ( came from ny to vt ) and im having an issue with my linkage i believe, if i manually put it in park underneath, it shifts down into P R N D 2 1 with the column shifter, but when i try to shift back up in to park it stays stuck in drive, the part the linkage hooks to on the column stays stuck down in the drive position, its all original parts, swapped in another "new" stock column, wonder if its something in the column cause we didnt mess with anything, just pulled it out of a truck thats sat for like 15 years and put it in this truck, or if its my linkage being shot, what are yalls thoughts?

I assume that you are pulling the shifter towards you when trying to get from D to P, yes?

yes, ive tried forcefully banging it up while pulled towards me to, because old truck stubbornness, im wondering if its something in lower linkage too, that may be hanging up or rusted up
