Don't try to talk me out of it don't tell thus swaps that swaps I have literally tons of engines here but specifically looking for a 305 tbi that hasn't been molested. I could also use a193 head or 3 yep not a misprint I need 1 would take 3. Also would like a pair of 305 601s or 305 swirlies Also could use some sets of stupid steep 8.5 10 bolt gears 2.41-2.73 Expiriments I'll let you know the results. When I'm done.

Ok, I'm really curious what the experiment is. Can I guess? Lol. Small cube, broad torque, tall geared econo-cruiser? If so, I think you should look at a TPI setup as well. Just basic stock runners and everything should suffice.

Might look around the marina or local docks. With all the references to "boat anchors" it might be ripe for the picking :boxing:
C'mon, lets get his conversation started. So much meat on this bone :)

Man this is not the first time I've tried to find 305s or swirly heads. Everyone bad mouths them so I'd think I'd find some cheap. I don't find any period.

Did you ever find anything you could use? I was interested to see what you would do with this….

Okay nobody came off of anything, which is surprising as much as everybody bad mouths the swirlys. The deal is the swirlys make the same torque on less fuel than a lot of other heads, they don't have screaming rpm horsepower but they make torque on less fuel, same with the 305s the high rpm potential isn't their strong point, the small bore makes breathing hard at higher rpms, but the long stroke makes torque. The swirlys do just as stated induce a swirl into the intake charge, the swirl helps port velocity and atomization it lights off easier, and burns faster. So you don't have to light it as early to get complete combustion, since your not fighting the expanding lit mixture for as long on your upstroke since you didn't light it as early, you make more power on less fuel. The Vortecs nake best torque with less timing too, without giving up flow at higher rpms, but there's a substantial cost difference and the Vortecs have other problems I don't want to deal with. Especially for am engine that's never going to see more than 4500 rpm. It's MBT minimum best torque. I was just looking to build a square that could run double duty, my Mazda Truck gets high 20s my Square gets low teens I wanted to build a compromise around a real 20 in a usable truck and just have the 1 truck.

Yeah I figured it was something like that, I think it’s a good idea….I know people love to talk sh!t about them too, Its frustrating....I have a TBI 350 in my V30 crew cab and its better than the old M code 350 as far as low end torque...I daresay it would out accelerate or at least keep pace with my K20 with 4.10 despite it being significantly heavier and having 3.73s. You may or may not know this, but 191s are equivalent, and I'm pretty damn sure 810s are as well, just a heavier casting with sodium filled exhaust valves....theres a lot of BS out there saying that the chambers are larger....they are not. The pistons on the HD version of the L05 are dished. Anyway this is to the best of my understanding but I though I could help broaden your search. Anyway the whole reason I brought this up is I was screwing around on marketplace and saw some listings...

Knew about the 191s,not the 810s. I appreciate the help thank you. I probably will just have to make some time and go to Kansas City and hit some pik n pull lots.

No problem, like I said, screwing around and though of this thread. On a side note, I'm not sure if the later 191s had the larger valves and rotators, 810s seem to be the 1-ton heads for later TBI engines....I know at least the earlier 191s had them. If your going to pik and pulls don't forget to check any Isuzu medium duty trucks :)

I’ll check next time I’m up at my shop and I’ll let you know the numbers.
Zip code is 63376, but there is a good chance I’ll be making a run to LMC/Classic parts this spring, I could bring them along with me and meet in KC somewhere.

There is a guy on Facebook marketplace that has rebuilt engines all the time. He currently has a 305 on there. Name is Herb Wyman. The 305 is normally aspirated. He might have some parts just laying around. His member 816-935-1732. He is in Independence.
