Would 12 volts on a 6 volt system kill your ignition system if its not converted?

Then why did you ask if it was from charging with 6 volts if you knew that. Also curious how you know that (albeit a viable cause of explosion)?

You can fry the points and condenser sending 12v to them. As I recall, even late 60s vehicles used a resistance wire before the power to the points and condenser. The HEI units need 12v, but the stock units should not.

It won't harm the points.I used to do 12v conversions on 6 v cars all the time.The resistance wire is in the hot lead to the coil.When I did a 12v swap I used the 6volt starter on 12v no problem a resistor to slow down the wipers used a 12v alternator with a built in regulator a 12v coil with an internal ballast and changed all the bulbs and the radio.

think most the fergussens and old fords at least the ones ive worked on were pos ground didmt have them flopped did ya

I had a 12 volt battery hooked negative ground and positive hot in a 6 volt tractor. It ran surprisingly a long time. The ground overheated at one point and the battery blew up, and eventually no spark.

But so did my grandpa, so I'm not sure what was all going on. If I fix the tractor I might as well 12 volt it? I'm prob gonna have to replace all components anyway and the gauges are all toast from water damage.
