Caution!! Before proceeding with the above highlighted step, disconnect the little shift indicator cable where it attaches to the shift lever collar.. Not doing so will damage the shift indicator..

Oh yeah, thanks Nick. That was the Cliff Notes version and unfortunately that step was omitted:

3. To drop the column you'll need to release the clip on the end of the gear indicator wire where it attaches to the bowl shroud:

You must be registered for see images attach

Also, make a little mark showing the location of the clip on the shroud. Upon reassembly, that will save you from having to realign the shift detents with the letters on the indicator. Do it now, so you don't forget!

Got new dimmer switch , hooked it up and tada!! high beams back working, thanks everyone
