BTW, boys ... if any of you were wondering (and I bet all have lost sleep over this) I was able to get the problem fixed. It was loose butt connectors with the wiring down by the starter. Since then, I replaced all the wiring and new starter cables and battery cables. Ole Brown is running well.

I'm now going to start a rebuild thread and fix her up for our Alaskan Winters.

Mine does this too sometimes.. the truck will be off, no key in the ignition, and the wipers will go off... Anyone else had this problem? What could it be? The wiper switch itself? Or the wiper motor maybe?

Time to revive this thread. I've gotten through a few winters and summers with Ole Brown. Now, the transmission has taken a dump (somewhat) and I need some help. I believe the transmission is a 700R4, but haven't confirmed it yet. It no longer drives in Drive, but I can get going in 2nd and it drives alright. Any clues as to wha went out?

How many times does the transmission shift when driving, if You get five shifts, then it is a 700R4 as the torque convertor will also lock in and seem like another gear.
If You get three shifts, it would then be a TH350 or TH400.
i`m not sure when they started with the 700R4, but to My thinking it was about 1984.

You should get three shifts nominally in a 700R4 (1-2, 2-3, 3-OD) and two in a TH350/400 (1-2, 2-3). I would say engaged lockup definitely makes a difference in the RPM versus inoperative/disconnected lockup in fourth gear (700R4) or third (TH350C), but it shouldn't feel like a whole 'nother shift because you have the pressure switch waiting to tell the converter clutch to lockup once it hits that top gear. The best way to identify the transmission, though, is the pan. I'll post a picture. I would check the adjustment on the shift linkage first because the fact that you can go down the next gear on the indicator (assuming three speed since you said two and not three) kinda sounds like the linkage is out of adjustment. Once you identify the transmission, all you should have to do is chock the wheels, put it in indicated neutral, disconnect the shift linkage at the transmission, move the lever by hand to true neutral, and reconnect. If that doesn't help you, I would pull the pan and check for stuff that shouldn't be there. I'll attach another picture to show what I mean.

Burned 3-4 clutch pack if 700r4. Rebuild or upgrade
Yep, if it's got 1 and 2, probably the 3/4 clutch pack is toast. 1982 was the first year for 700r4 and was junk Capital J. They got a little better in 84 with more input splines and such, but still not so wonderful. By 87 the auxiliary valve body came about and fixed several things, 88 more changes even yet just like every single year of the 700r4. There was updates every year. Rule of thumb, if you want to keep a 700r4, find an (87) 88-93 core to build and have some upgrades done to it and you should be able to get it last for awhile. If it's a secondary vehicle and you can do without the OD, then just build a Th350 with the intermdiate aka long shaft and it'll bolt right in and able to use the same crossmember, and driveshaft.

Thanks everyone. I'm heading out to the garage now to take a look-see. Will report back. Plus, should we start a new thread in the appropriate section?

I believe that the 93 was the first year of the 4L60E transmission. Same as the 700R4 except of the E stands for electronically controlled, instead of a cable like the 700R4.
I`m not sure what it would take to adapt them.
The 93 and 94 years would interchange, the 95s howeer was a one year only and did not work well with anything else except for a 95.
But then there are shift controllers that can be bought to make them all work.

it looks like I have a 700r4 with a NP208/10 bolt w3.08 gearing. I'll post a new thread in the Transmission section along with some pics. Special Thanks to '87 GMC Jimmy
