Window Felt Replacement

I am In The Process of replacing my window felt on the passenger side. It is NOT going well. Disassembly went fairly well but getting the new felt to slide down the track between the glass and the track is proving to be impossible. Yes, I have sprayed the rubber with silicon lubricant.

I watched two different YouTube videos and both of them just went back in easily.

I am Very Irritated that the "Search" function on this forum is not working for me, I get "OOps a Server Error. Try again later". The information was a major reason I joined this forum and if it doesn't work...

I am probably less tolerant since it is about 95F and 85% humidity outside right now.

Does anyone have any suggestions to make this re-installation work?

The rubber will absorb the silicone lube unless it looks like you've dipped it in a 5 gal bucket.
Although liquid soap will tend to dry it out, I've used it before with no future problems.

You may have to ping the Admins on the Search function. Don't dispair. It doesn't always work well for me either.

I just did mine.. followed Brothers video. The vertical pc should slide right in there, mine did. The horizontal guys can be tough of you have rusted clip inserts. I was lucky, pryed a bit ans filed then pushed from an end. Be sure to tape the door to protect it.. you will scratch it very easy and ofter if not careful.

@roundeyed square I did watch the Brothers Video. And for him it did slide right down. Mine would not.

I fought it and finally got it back together. I wish I hadn't because with the new tighter felts my already weak regulator will NOT work at all. I was able to force the window up and closed but it won't move under its own power anymore. So basically I screwed myself for Father's Day.

I fought it and finally got it back together. I wish I hadn't because with the new tighter felts my already weak regulator will NOT work at all. I was able to force the window up and closed but it won't move under its own power anymore. So basically I screwed myself for Father's Day.

Mine is closed up and works great. But isn’t there a rear track adjustment that you can make? I can’t remember, I know there is on the 67-72 series.

And power windows! Man all I can say is good luck. I much prefer cranks in the oldies.

I thought the window track felt went in pretty easy. Just did it recently. Trying to recall exact sequence, but little fuzzy. Got front, top and started down the back with window all the way down, then fished it down behind the window, in the track. Required running window up some to make more gap between window and track down lower and vice versa. I recall moving the window a few times before it was completely in.
I will say, if the rear track was any further forward, it likely would have been more difficult. But I never removed the windows, regulators or rear track when I redid the truck. Nor adjusted them.

Question for you guys though. Is there an upper limit adjustment in power window travel range?
Mine seem to just barely seat into the upper felt, like they could go up another 1/4" maybe?
Haven't driven on the highway yet with all new seals everywhere, so not sure if it will whistle or not.

I don't think there is a upper stop, it just goes till the motor can't go any further. I had the passenger side that also would not go up all the way. I ended replacing the motor and it did go up all the way. Got the motor from LMC.

This is correct. there is a bumper in the bottom of the door shell that the window rests on in the fully open position. The motor shouldn't stop going upward until it either goes through all the teeth on the regulator or the the glass hits the top of the door shell.

The best and easiest way to do this is to loosen the bolts holding the track and pull it away from the window. Replace the felt and then readjust the track to the proper position for the new felt. With the track loosened up the felt should be super easy to replace and once adjusted properly the window should move up and down easily.

This is correct. there is a bumper in the bottom of the door shell that the window rests on in the fully open position. The motor shouldn't stop going upward until it either goes through all the teeth on the regulator or the the glass hits the top of the door shell.

Right. And if that rubber stop bumper is missing, the glass will go down a little further and stop on the bracket itself. But it will make a thunk noise as it hits. The only thing that will stop upward travel is the window run channel itself.

I also had to change my drivers door motor after the new felts. I bought a pair off ebay for like $58 with a 5 year warranty. I haven't done the passenger door yet as I've been trying to locate a wing window that has the black metal cladding on the divider bar as mine is bare, rusted metal. I've looked at about a dozen and only found like 2 in the bone yards.

Thank you for the explanation. Both windows go up the exact same amount and the motors are new ish and work well. Window just appears to not quite fully contact the felt at the top at the very front.

@roundeyed square and @Bextreme04 I did not know there was a way to adjust the track. I will study this and will report back, hopefully soon. My entire house has Covid right now so not much is getting done outside mere survival.

Maybe you could just take the glass out and get it powder coated.
