Who has the best manual for rebuilding transmissions haynes or atsg?

Who has the best trany manual? Reguardless of your trany rebuild exp. from beginners to professional to master w/certification.

Well I trouble will using haynes on the make and model specific books cause they have stuff in there or it wasnt detailed enough. But I did buy the haynes electrical manual it was pretty detailed IMO. Maybe its just the Haynes overhaul manuals that arent make and model that are the detailed ones.

Haynes has another book that just talks about turbo 350 and 400's there's a lot of pic in it that are helpfull

What he said^^ An awful lot of the Haynes books are just garbage, they don't cover nearly enough for the 25 bucks they charge. Sorry, I'm no help on this one.

Imo, ATSG is the best for building a trans. Chilton and Haynes are decent books but can be very generalised since they cover spans of years, not specifics. ATSG books are specifically for rebuilding and are transmission specific so they tend to cover more detail.

That said, a factory service manual is also great. The detail is far better than Haynes or Chilton.

ATSG is great for the trans builder or someone who has trans knowledge, but it you think its gonna walk you thru a rebuild, you'd be wrong. ATSG is clearly, and they even suggest it, is for the transmission building pro. ATSG is more of spelling out the differances between other transmissions, or year model changes, interchanges etc. Not how to build a transmission. I do try to keep ATSG manuals handy but, I don't have very many.

In most cases, that's a fact. I do prefer the OEM manuals too. Not only for the vehicle itself, but for the components. I have a factory 4L60-E training manual. I like it alot, but it does go into detail that is not necessary for rebuild.

Believe it or not but a lot of local librarys have the old 500 page chiltons. Time to dig up those library cards!

I need to see if my mom will send me the ones I have at her house...I had like 10-12 SB FSMs there.
