The 440t-4 are the previous generation of 4speed fwd. kinda like the 700R4 grew up to become the 4L60E.

Same thing, I have done a couple many years ago, just never invested in the tools. The few I did was way back in my dealership days, or I borrowed the tools to build them.

I have a 700r thats still in the truck attatched to the transfer case in a 91 gmt400 if that would work for you... was driven with a 350 until i pulled the 350 for my square.

Yeah, that's the one. I have one that is an '88 unit (improvements over the earlier years) and don't know anyone trustworthy enough and familiar enough with them to properly rebuild one. It needs to handle 200-250 hp. The current trans still works, but the 2-3 shift is occasionally a little soft and it still has the stock engine with much less HP.
