I tackled the intake gasket replacement on Saturday. 8 hours later...I was headed back home. I didn't get to time it with a light, just by ear as my dogs & I were both getting hungry! By the time I got home, my idle was high, and it was lacking power, so I feared I had a bad air leak because I over-torqued my intake bolts a bit. Visually checked for fluid leaks, but everything was dry & normal looking. Sunday, I headed back to my buddy's shop to throw the light on it, and realized my high-idle was due to my cruise linkage pulling the throttle open. Got it timed, topped it off with more coolant, now it's idling like a champ and running great! Also found out that my wiper motor plug had somehow came unplugged, hence why my new wiper/cruise switch wasn't working correctly. i plugged it back in and VOILA! All wiper functions now work perfectly again! I did not know that they could even work without that plugged in, but it must be a secondary plug for the intermittent module?? Now, I still have to troubleshoot my brake switch to see if that's why my cruise isn't working. We got about 8-10" of new snow, and I drove the '87 today and it ran like a top and got around pretty good. It feels good driving these old trucks with all their primitive features & functions like lock-in hubs & a transfer case lever. She shifts in & out of 4WD on the fly greatly!

Well, once again I was wrong. It was pure coincidence that the noise went away during my troubleshooting. The fan clutch was NOT the noise. It was the alternator. That alternator has less than 5K miles on it and I paid good money for the AC Delco part. I remember when I installed it that it would growl with the belt as tight as I thought it should be. I backed off the belt tension and it seems to be fine. I am not happy with it but I will drive it a bit and see.

Not happy with it or me. At least I have a new fan clutch...whether I need it or not.
Was the fan hitting/ scraping the housing? I had that recently happen on a newer unit.

Just got back from the muffler shop- they welded the O2 sensor bung in the driver side, then the offered to put one in the passenger side as well so I told them to have at it.

Felt so good to have it out on the road that I drove her around all afternoon to do errands.

Nope, the bearing is just raising hell and making a lot of noise when the belt tension is high. I cannot see the pulley getting out of alignment but the noise is surely there.

Jealous!!
My Uncle in law has a computer plug in do-hickey, OBD2(I think) and we are going to see if it and the dash tells us something more specific about my current sideline.

Hope you get it sorted soon! It’s hard to sleep when our trucks aren’t running right. Seriously. Or at least I don’t sleep well.

I’m looking forward to having an AFR gauge so I can dial in the carb. For all the “Meh” that the Edelbrock AVS gets, it works really well. Starts easy, mild mannered in traffic even with the lopey cam, just doesn’t like sudden size 10 1/2 foot slammed to the floor. Once it catches (less than a half second) it takes off like a shot. Hope to figure out if it’s getting too much or too little dinosaur juice in sudden WOT situations.

Just FYI, your truck is not OB2, it's OBD1. You have to use the paper clip method and count the blinks in the dash to get the codes

On my 91 Cherokee I just turn the key to on-off-on-off-on without starting it and count the blinks. 55 to start, then the codes blink, then 55 to end.
